I dont want to get a remanufactured engine (1100$ after core) because i heard they arnt that good. So i was wondering what the cheapest best crate motor is, i wanna keep the price as low as possible and be able to use a lot of my old parts so probably a 302/306, any help would be great. thanks guys!

I am in search for a new motor myself and i found out that if you aren't mechanically inclined then A crate motor is the best way, I've been looking at the Ford Racing GT-40 345 hp motor for $3,000 it seems it has the best bang for buck. Other things I would look into would be a 306 Long block from D.S.S.they retail for about $4500-5000. This crap gets expensive...... Also if you upgrade don't neglect the tranny, clutch and fuel system It will stink to have all kinds of power and your counterparts can't handle the power.

i have the gt-40 crate motor with the b303 cam........awsome power but its more like 320hp.. i raced a 99 cobra and at about 125 mph i had him by about 3 car lengths and that was from about a 50 mph roll...anyways, if you buy a crate motor i suggest some other mods like an aftermarket upper and lower intake manifold and a cai......no sense in choking your motor with stock induction that is only good for maybe 240hp......if you are running an auto like i am i suggest a bigger stall converter......i have a 2800 and with the "B" cam i need to upgrade to a 3200-3500......BTW the b303 is recomended for 5 speed applications ........

the dss motors are good and a little more money......i dont know anyone who has one though

SmockDoiley had a great idea on here a while back, maybe he'll post in with more info on the combo than i remember, but it's something like this...

Get a 351W and stroke it to a 392W. The beauty of the combo is that it uses all off the shelf parts because of the stroke that a 392 uses, so there's no expensive made to order parts. The combo requires building it yourself, but in the end he figured it out to about 1100 bucks for a complete short block, which has 500hp potential with the right h/c/i combo.

you may want to consider a short block I built my entire engine for a little over $3500, thats all forged crank, probe pistons, new svo block, i-beam rods, main support, 7qt racing pan, melling hv oil pump, custom cam, new lifters, pushrods, rockers, double roller timing chain, high flow water pump, edelbrock heads.

The rest of the stuff I swapped from the old donor engine.

that would include somone putting all that stuff in... less labor cost for some guys to throw it in a gt40 crate motor..

i don't have the experience nor time to do that

wish i could though

BTW.. did u get your car dyno'd ?

yeah I know, god knows it took me forever to build it cause of lack of time, but for me the driving force was money. I didn't have it so I had to do it all myself to get it done, the $3500 was all parts no labor, if someone is going to have it put in for them by a shop expect to spend way more than that.

No dyno numbers yet still tweaking it on the tweecer. once I have it pretty close to what I want, I'm going to take it down to laroccas and see what she puts down. I'm hoping for at least 500rwhp
