Best electric fan for daily driven bolt-on car with A/C?

What's the best electric fan for a daily driven bolt-on 5.0 that uses the A/C in the Arizona 110+ temps? My car currently has a stock radiator and alternator.

were it me (I am down in Tucson), i would run a Mark 8 or Viper fan. definately need a 130+ amp alternator IMHO. i also think a variable controller would be neat, esp if you sit in traffic up there (everytime i go up there, i freak at how congested it is).

and a nice 3 core or alum radiator upgrade should work nice when the time comes.

The 3.8 taurus fan with a DCC controller. You can use the stock alternator with the DCC unit. $30 or so bucks for the fan, 110 for the DCC unit and you not only have better cooling abilities than any other aftermarket fan, but you'll pay about half.

I live in AZ as well.. no problems. I upgraded to the 3g alternator soon after installing the fan.. I hate seeing the volt gauge move much, and I have a stereo which drained my old alt bad. You should do the 3g upgrade regardless of whether you do an electric fan or not.

I use a black magic. Have had it for the last 4 yrs and never had a problem. Bolts right up to stock or aftermarket radiator. Comes with adjustable controler. I love mine.

In all honesty, i would do a nice radiator first. that is your start of your cooling system, so, it really doesnt matter a WHOLE lot which fan you run, if your rad cant cut it, your not gonna win anyway. but yes, the mark8 or the black magic would be good choices.

This is my setup, Zirgo 16" fan flows 3300cfm which is a lot compared to most 16" and some 18" fans, 3 row radaitor, 180 thermostat, and painless wiring thread-in thermo switch 200 on/ 185 off. you can also get 185 on/165 off.

i also upgraded to a 6G 130amp alternator.

and i stay about 180-205 varies on driving/idling, stop/go

I have heard that the black magic is pretty good all around fan but when you get in into H/I/C area it may or may not keep up. I am in the same boat and was considering the back magic heavily but the manual says its rated up to 250ish hp with air con... dunno how true it is because there are people here that push a lot more with it. Now I am leaning towards a Spal dual 11 or a viper fan with a dc controler. Cooling is not something to take chances or cheap out on. Just my thoughts.

Where are you finding these prices? Mainly the rad. and the alt.

Also, what is the difference between an adjustable controller and a variable controller?

an adjustable controller has a rheostat on it, to allow one to set the temp that the fan will come on at (often from like 180-240*).

a variable controller is completely different. it does not use on/off switches or relays. it will run the fan at whatever percentage it sees fit for the conditions. so unlike conventional fan controllers, which have the fan either on or off, the variable controller runs the fan at a percentage of its total potential. very trick stuff.

The G6 alt. is a motorcraft ford racing product goes up to $300 if bought at dealership, but i have seem them for about 170-250 or so. rad. brand new again. all brass copper contruction from some rad. company, really good tho, as long as it does the job.

I just picked up a 3.8L Taurus fan and a DCC for my bolt-on daily driver. I think this fan will work just fine right now, and probably even if I add heads and a cam.

I had a bad experience with the proform fan I originally got from Jegs. The little temperature sensor was cheap, and broke after the first time I had to reposition it. Then with my replacement unit, the fan stopped working completely while I was driving, for no reason, and I overheated. It wasn't all that great anyway.. covers only about 1/4 of the radiator.

That taurus fan with the dcc controller, I bought the LED light for an extra 5 bucks so I know when the fan comes on.. goes from green to yellow to red based on the fan speed.. the controller does such a great job, the fan has never needed to run at full power, even idling in 100+ temps in traffic here in Tucson.

Mr. Baskin says (and I tried to make sure he was serious,) you don't even need a 130 amp alternator to do it, since it applies power to the fan gradually. For the used taurus fan, the DCC controller, some radiator pull through ties, and the time to install it all, it was still less than the black magic or proform. Just over $130 I think.

And about upgrading your rad, I know several people running blown foxbody's on the stock rad with no problems.. one of which uses a chevy cavalier electric fan and stock rad.. works fine for him and he daily drives it.

Almost any setup will work as long as air is prorperly moving threw the rad.

i also seen 600+Hp cars and diesels run smaller rads. the size of 2 row mustangs and Tempo LOL rad. gets the job done atleast.

Where do you get the dcc controller. I really like the idea of that with a taurus fan and taurus alternator. One car has all the gear I need save for a 4 guage wire and the dcc controller.
