Best Gears for a 94 AODE GT Convertible

I've decided after reading several articles about mods to replace my gears. The only mods I have done are Flowmaster Cat-Backs and a K&N filter. The only other mod I am going to do is to replace my intake with a stock Cobra Intake and maybe a Cobra throttle body, but this may not happen for quite some time. I'm trying to decide between 3.93s and 4.10s. The other question I have is what kind of shop does rear ends? My Ford garage told me they do not "mess with suff like that". Is a transmission shop who I should be calling for the install?
thanks for any and all info,
Mitch

For an auto 4.10's is what is recomended. Also a cobra throttle body is the same as a stock gt they're both 60mm. I don't understand why they wouldn't (ford) switch out your gears but just check with any local speed shop the install run about $400 or so.

Since your car is an auto conv. I would definatly go with the 4:10's. It will get your heavier stang out of the hole much better than 3:73's or 3:90's. As for install, find a good performance shop (preferibly a mustang performance shop), where they are used to performing these types of mods. Installing gears takes some experience, and precision, not a fitting task for the average weekend warrior. good luck

Is the ~$400 for the install what I should expect to pay if I buy the gears, or is that for gears and labor?
thanks,
Mitch

I agree on your gear choice, but disagree on the throttle body specs. Cobra throttle bodies are 65mm, not 60mm.

When you say "is recommended", recommended by whom?

I dont see how you can say that, when every post ever put about gears in the history of Stangnet has mucho disagreement in what each person suggests, and I dont think we can all make a "blanket" recommendation without knowing a few things and the direction of the car.

Considerations:

1. Daily driver....lean towards 3.73's
Casual Cruise....4.10's

2. Future power add ons.....3.73's
Just basic bolt ons.....4.10's

3. Tons of hwy driving...3.73's
Very little.....4.10's

4. No other tuning device or chip.. 3.73's
Add'n of chip... 4.10's (rev limiter issues with stock comp)

5. Cost of gas an issue...3.73's
Not an issue...4.10's

THEN, you have to make a decision based on combinations of above, like "my car is daily driver, with a LOT of hwy miles"..you get the picture.

I have 3.73's..but with the Vortech, that is plenty, since mine is my only driver.

I think ALL of us will agree on this: Your car will feel like a new beast with either of those gears, if you have been driving it with stock gears for awhile. I always have said that the "best" SOTP feel I ever got from any mods, save for the Vortech, was when I left the shop after gears. (Tq conv. next)

You will love the gears, and if you follow up with a shift kit/converter combo, you will be amazed.

Most of the auto guys from here and other forums I visit prefer the 4.10's. He is only going to be going an intake and that's it. The fact that there is only 200-300 rpm difference between the two really should be a factor here.

What gears did your car some with stock Rob? the reason i ask is because i'm surprised that you had a better SOTP feel from gears then the converter.

according to his first post where he said what mods he plans on doing, (depending on how much highway driving he does) 4.10's are the way to go.

I think they were 2.73's (been so long)
ANyway, I didnt really have "sotp" big time with the converter as much as the gears alone, but I felt the difference nicely, moreso than the exhaust/headers, etc (except the the latters made the nice sound!)

4.10's.

No arguments about it.

The AODE is such a parasite that it isnt even funny... 4.10's are needed to move the heavy SN95 VERTS, as well as the hardtops.

4.10s and the TB on a GT and Cobra are the same size, I have one to prove it.

4.10's. I have them and love them. Sometimes I wonder if I should have done 4.30 or 4.56 but never thought of 3.73's since the install. You may want to budget money for a chip to correct your shifting after the install, I needed it.

3.73s here and I have no desire to go any steeper. I use a power adder and I also like to "cruise" on the highway. Gas mileage, wear and tear, etc. play a big part in it too. I don't care much for toppin' out the gears around 1/4 with our weak arse O/D bands. I also drive a lot. 170,000 miles and still kicking.

With 3.73s my computer doesn't fuak up, and my speedo is "descently" close with the closest speedo gear there is. 4.10s have been a nightmare for a few guys on here tranny wise. To me the extra cost of doing it right computer wise, just isn't there.

BTW - I went from 2.73s as well. 3.73s are a world of difference.

Wow Paul, I thought I was the ONLY one leaning in that direction....I noticed that several of the 4.10's rec's have come from NON AODE guys.
