Best NoTune CAI

I see a lot of threads on CAI's. I want to get one without a tune. The ones I have been looking at are:
C&L ~$320
K&N ~$286
S&B~$205

The S&B one claims the most hp and is the least expensive, but I assume without a tune that they would all be about equal. I have never heard of S&B and I am wondering if it is a quality part. If it is I think I might get it to save the $80 vs the K&N, but if it is not very well built than I would just go with the K&N

I just found this article in 5.0 mustang magazine:
2005-2006 Ford Mustang GT Cold Air Intake Kit - Installation - 5.0 Mustang & Super Fords Magazine

They tested the S&B CAI on a stock GT with no tune and got 17hp, 10lb-ft torque. Not too bad for a simple bolt on.

Kind of pointless if you're not going to get a programmer. If you can only get one, get the programmer.

I think the Roush intake would be the best choice if you don't want to get a programmer just yet. Run it with the restrictor plate thingamabob and you can run it without a tune. Take it off when you get a programmer with a high flow tune.

I think the same thing can also be said for the Steeda intake. If you run just the filter you can run without a tune (like the Mac intake for that matter). If you buy the high flow inlet tube you gotta have a programmer.

I believe Kooldawg has it if I'm not mistaking.

5.0 Mag reviewed it and found better ones on the dyno, however that was on a stock hooded car. I bet if you get one of those Shelby hoods with open nostrils it would probably work much better.

... and it certainly would need a tune.

I do have the WMS intake and the ram air tray. It is their 80mm MAF so no retune was required, but I got a tuner anyway to get the many added benefits! Next year, when I get the LTs and cams, I will be stepping up to their 95mm MAF. Instead of a ram air hood, I got the Bullitt grill and cut out all the holes for increasing the air flow. This should really help as it also eliminates the fog lights which block two of the three intake holes on the ram air tray.

Aren't they referencing 198 hp and 201 torque. Those sound like V6 numbers to me??

There's something bad wrong with that article. It says the car is a s197 GT but it only made 218 RWHP after gaining 17 with the CAI. Sounds like a v6 to me too.

To the OP, I've never heard of any dyno proof that a non tune CAI adds power. Makes perfect sense to buy a CAI/tuner package. That's proven.

Your going to need that tuner anyway if you plan on gears, full exhaust, etc.

Plus a good tune increases MPG.

That is wierd about the hp and torque figures. The pictures show a GT with the 4.6L though. Maybe the numbers are a typo In the end I ordered the S&B intake from jegs along with an axle back exhaust on Sunday. I didn't really want to spend too much and I want to stick with 87 octane. It was only $205, so that's why I didn't go for one with a tune. I've had CAIs on previous cars and felt like it gave a slight gain so I figured it was worth a shot. I'll see if it makes a subjective difference after the install.

I just installed the CAI tonight and drove it around. Maybe it is in my head but it seems to rev faster and it feels like more power

Glad you like the increase. Now save up for the tuner/tunes. You can still run 87, but also get 93 octane tunes. I originally ran with the 87 octane until the tank was nearly empty then bumped up to the 93! Even with the 87 octane, you will feel the difference...easily another 15-20 RWHP and the 93 octane can add another 5-8 RWHP on top of that.
With my WMS CAI (88mm), Pypes O/R H, MAC axle backs and 4.10s and 87 octane (Doug's tune), my car put down 280 RWHP and 295 RWTQ. Not to shabby for a few mods and an automatic I didn't have my tuner or 93 in the tank that day. I go on the 18th of this month to see what Doug's 93 race tune does.
