A buddy of mine in Ft. Worth needs to upgrade his cooling for those lovely 100+ days.

He wants to go with an aluminum rad and electric fan + shroud, and he's looking for recommendations.

His car is a 66 coupe with an EFI 302. He's adding AC in the near future.

He's not allergic to junkyards but can also go with a kit.

Your thoughts and suggestions are very much appreciated.

I used one of those large universal radiators and cut the radiator support and made my own brackets. Fits perfectly, gives more space to the motor and cools really good. Nice thing is, the radiator is about 250-300 bucks for an alum job, without my fan switch in, even when its 100+ outside it will only heat up to about 180 tops. Thats cruising down the highway at 3500 rpm on my hi compression build mind you.

Just depends on what your willing or want to do.

Difference in stock to mine.

3-row brass radiator, 6-blade clutch fan with thermal-type clutch, stock or deep style fan shroud, manual or remote shutoff on heater hose from engine to heater. I used to live in south Florida, and this combo worked fine, even when I had the AC going full blast.

Blown65, it looks like you made use of every bit of the extra space. The side by side nicely illustrates the difference in surface. I don't know if he's willing to do that sort of cutting on the car, but it looks like plenty of rad for his purposes.

2+2 GT, I'll likely go with a clutch and a cut-off for my own car. I may have more questions about a remote cut-off after I look around.

I'm referring to a stock dimension radiator, which required no cutting, of course.

The simplest is a mechanical valve, but you have to open the hood for that. You can also rig a remote valve, which uses a Bowden cable, like a manual choke knob.

best junkyard fans are hands down the dual-speed taurus fans . . . there are other options out there too.

mustang modular fans are good and use the same motor as the middle 90s single speed taurus fans. If you have a monster radiator, late 90s mercury mystiques had a giant twin fan setup that fits foxbody radiator dimensions to a tee.

I could have sworn that I read a thread on the Mark VIII fans some time ago, but I was having trouble finding the threads I thought I remembered before I started this one, though I was in a rush.

As for the cut-off for the heater, I'm hesitant to go with the manual since I've been stuck in traffic with an overheating car and been forced to use the turn on the heater full blast method of supplementary cooling. Saved me from the full consequences of a reassembly oversight.

Thanks all for your suggestions and any more to follow.

Where in Ft. Worth are you? I am in the Keller area.

I got a 'deal' from a guy when I bought all my parts and it included a radiator specifically made for the efi conversion. I have a dual speed taurus fan with a custom control I built to take AC, startup of both speeds, etc... works like a charm and does not require a starter solenoid to work.

Anyway, I can meet you to show you everything and it always nice to have a classic neighbor.

I would aviod fluidyne. To damn thick and you run into other problem. Ask me how I know. Next time I have hte engine out for hte cam swap/ repaint this summer. I am goign to put a 24 in 3 core 68 big block radiator. My 1968 has a 190 degree thermo all stock cooling and barlely gets to 190 in los angles traffic. Basically just parked on teh freeway with a/c running.
