Just sold my 2000 Lightning and I am starting a new project.
I want to build a 94/95 mustang that is a sleeping street beast. I want to supercharge it and have something that is 500HP. I plan on taking my time and I want to build something that is very reliable/durable.
Got to start somewhere, so what block and stroker kit should I go with?? I want to be able to turn 6500 to 7000rpm. I have been told the 331 kit is the best route with a low compression setup (8.5 to 1).
What do you guys think and who has the best quality stroker kits??
Or would it be cheaper to buy a complete short block from somebody??
Should I be looking at an R or Dart block for this much power?? The last thing I want is to build something that has a high probability of breaking.

If you want 500rwhp and you want it turn 6500-7000 rpms AND you want this all to be durable/reliable, I would look at nothing else than a Dart block or R block. The 347 will give you more power and torque right off the bat. But if you want a 331, theres no reason not too.

A scat 4340 kit runs about 1350-1400 from Brian.

You can get a Dart Block from anywhere. I like HawaiiRacing.com out of cali. If you want a reliable 500 you could build a naturally aspirated 408. It would make 500 horses, do it with a cheaper stock 351 block, and also be cheaper because you wouldnt need the blower. The 331 kit is more reliable than a 347 but either one would give you your power numbers. If price isnt an issue than do the dart block with blower, but the 408 would be cheaper and more exotic because how many people have 408s in their 94/95 compared to superchargers or 331s. Also, if you want crazy reliable power than do 6-8 psi on a 408 and youll be in the mid 600s for power. Whatever you do, I recommend either the Vic Jr or AFR heads for a supercharged stroker. Any other head will run out of breathe. And use a custom cam for best power and drivability.

Would the 351W fit in the 94/95 gt and still allow me to have all the luxuries like AC??
Will the 351W handle 500+HP with out any problems??
What year 351W should I look for?
Can you turn a 408 6500rpm to 7000rpm with out any problems??
Definitely sounds like a cheaper route!

The one thing with the 408 is that it probably wont be a sleeper. Others will know that you got something. Im not familair with the sn95 bracketry or anything. You should have no problem building a 500 horse 408. The torqe will awesome There really wont be the need to turn it to 7k though. Ideally, you should look for something like a 69 block, but most any will suffice.

BTW, there are also plenty of other heads available that will make the power and not run out of breath....

My 332" has a calculated "safe" limit of slightly over 8000rpm, and has been estimated at 500+ hp at the flywheel. Stock mid-70s 302 block, with some mods and a billet steel main girdle. Hank the Crank forged steel 3.25" crank, Eagle 5.5" H-beam rods with floating pins, JE Ultra-light flat tops. TFS Track-heat heads, 10.9:1 compression, premium pump gas. It makes more power than my II can currently deal with, so I usually just start off in 3rd gear,(C4 manual valve body) and it will still smoke the tires if I give it any more than half throttle.

I know there are other heads out there but I'm talking about the main brands, GT40s, edelbrock performer series, trickflow TW, ported stockers, and holleys. Yes, a 351 will use all your stock brackets and you can use any 351 block but the strongest are the pre 72 blocks. 351s and 302s share balancers as long as both engines are 50 oz imbalanced, timing covers, heads, and valve covers. It should still be a sleeper though because its really just compression, cam and exhaust that give a cars power away, and cam can be fixed by exhaust. And since you dont need a huge cam to make power with a 408 and your compression should still be around 10 to 1 the car should idle and sound like an E303 cammed 302. As far as looks, its really hard to tell the difference between a 351 and a 302 by just looking. If you want a smoking deal on a 351 block. Hawaiiracing.com has a deal on prepped blocks. They have stroker prepped fully machined, ready to go 351 blocks for $699. Its bored, honed, align honed, has new freeze blocks, cam bearings, and is clearanced for strokers. Get that and a 408 kit for $1300-1500 depending on company and you've got a 408 short block for $2200. With a main support, and forged crank and H-beam rods a 408 should handle 6500-7000 rpms but you really dont need to spin it that far. You wouldnt even need gears for an engine like that since the torque would be crazy. As far as cost, since you'll need an aftermarket ignition, heads, headers, and intake anyways, the cost would be about the same. I think the AFR 205 heads are too pricey so I would run TrickFlow highports or Vic Jr heads since they flow just as well, then a custom cam, Vic Jr. intake and some good equal length headers and this thing would be a killer.

I appreciate all the help. Correct me if I am wrong but it sounds like any 351W block will work as long as it is in good shape and I use a girdle along with all forged compnents.
Now that I ahve settled on a 408, I will have to settle on heads and intake setup.
I would like to go with the lowest possible setup to limit the hood weight. I hate the cowl hoods but I guess I have no choice.
What heads do you guys like?? I have herd great things from the AFR 205's.
Also what would be a good EFI intake, the Twisted Wedge??
I hope I can find some good used parts for sale to save a little money.

Smock, the 302 brackets will not work on a 302. You need to get 351 specific brackets from somewhere. Because the 351 block is taller. You will also need 351 swap headers, or new exhaust possibly both. The swap costs are going to cost a tad, but hey I love the idea of a 408 in an SN95.
