I am buying an 88 lx in a couple days and will probably have to drive it home. I live in NY and salt and snow is gonna get everywhere so what is the best way to protect it from rusting? Will 1 4 hour drive home cause any rust issues in the future?

Rinse the bottom of the car off as soon as possible. If you can get an above freezing day a lawn sprinkler will work if the car isn't too low.

Rinse the wheel wells and strut tower area if nothing else.

Rent an enclosed trailer or ship it enclosed.

Otherwise wash the hell out of it when you get home including the underside.

I’m in NY myself and even though I may get the urge on those nice Feb days, I won’t drive it with all the sand and salt on the roads. April will be here soon enough !

I won't even drive mine on the road until a couple good rainstorms wash all the salt away.

Trust me, I want to..but there are reasons for me to stay put. Driving my car year round just isn't high enough on the list

I was disappointed when a link to that thread wasn't the first post

If there’s no rust right now there’s probably no problem. If you’re worried take to a full service car wash on a dry day and get the underbody wash.

Rinsing will get most of the salt off but it will I doubt you can reach everywhere. Like above the fuel tank and behind the bumper covers.
Also oil or greasing can't reach everywhere. I do both but only to slow the rusting on daily drivers. On a true never winter driven car. It must NEVER be winter driven.

I am a big fan of RustCheck, but they are in Canada only (https://www.rustcheck.com/). However, another company is very similar called Krown (https://www.krown.com/en/) in the states. I've used both on my daily drivers, been very satisfied...

Ziebart coatings have worked on a bunch if my older cars. You set an appointment and they coat the inside of the panels and undercarriage of the car. My 84 had ziebart and never rusted except for a very small spot where the exhaust rubbed the rear frame rail. My 88 econoline has it too and has no rust under the van ( other than normal surface rust on bare frame ). No scaling and this has been my winter storm driver for about 5 years in maryland. The stuff works. The factory used to use it....if it has blue plastic plugs in the rockers it's been ziebarted.

Thanks for all the tips! Ended up not buying the car but there are some more I'll be checking out soon. I'll probably just get it shipped home when I buy one
