Biggest tire for stock 17" wheels

I'm sure this gets asked all the time but whats the widest tire I can put on the back of my 00 GT with the stock 17" wheels? I would luv to get some 18" wheels but am sure I will go through the rear tires before I can afford a whole new tire+wheel combo. Also I am using Eibach Sportline springs.

I'm not sure how wide your wheels are, but I had 275/40 x 17s on the back of my 98 Roush. They fit great, no rubbing. I think the rims were 10" wide.

I've been told 275/40-17 but I would suggest 255/40-17.

It looks like 275/40 would stick out too far, like the rim offset is not right for that wide a tire. I guess I will have to go with some 18x9 or 10" in back with a different offset then try for 265 or 285/35's . I dont think a Mustang GT would hav mud/snow rated tires. I bought my 00 used and it had some cool looking directional tires, tho I never heard of the brand.

What's the difference between 245/45/17 and 255/40/17 ?? I know that the 40 means the height of the tire, but doesnt the 255 change the ratio? I'm confused.

The second number is the height as a percentage. Meaning the height of those examples are 45% of 245 and 40% of 255.

i've got 255's on my stock 17s and honestly i would not put more tire on it than that. seems like its a perfect fit for the rims, and my safety is more important than traction sure i'll get 315s on the back eventually, but it'll be with different rims than the stockers.
