Billet flywheels Anyone using them

I've got the FMS billit....i like it fine i suppose....it's not one of those things you think to yourself "boy, i sure wish my flywheel were working better".....you pretty much put it on and if it works proper then it's doing it's job, ya know? I bought the billit with strength in mind, but it does rev quicker than a typical production wheel.
 
What do you think of the billet steel flywheel for a regular ole street Stang Rick? Any advantage there? Do the billet steel also have a replaceable friction plates?

The Billet steel flywheels are a good idea for a stock style car if you are looking for a SFI approved set-up and need to replace the flywheel. Most of the aftermarket ones have replaceable friction surfaces.

Rick I don't understand why the Alum would hurt it. Can you please explain. Is there a steel flywheel that you recomend. that SFI aproved
 
The job of the flywheel is the balance the engine, provide a surface for the clutch to connect, and to keep the engine running smoothly. When you launch, a heavier flyweel will carry more energy, but after launch it will take more to spin it. An alumimum will rev quicker since there is less rotational mass, which will help a lot in the low gears where the engine is increasing by 2000rpm a second or more, but you will have to launch harder.

wellllllll I come out of the Hole at over 6000 almost at red line So I really don't think I can come out any harder. I am not worried about breaking stuff. But I am going to change to a SFI bellhousiing for next year when I get this 331 done

So what do you guys recomend for the flywheel now.

Tremec 3550 trans,steeda shifter,cobra clutch,aluminum drive shaft,drive shaft loop,4:10 gears,31 splin axels,rear end cover, arbun diff.
(Suspension)
Darg lanch kit,Strange Adjustable struts,Lakewood 50/50 shocks,HPMS megabytes control arms upper & lower, removed sway bar,ET streets 26/10.5/15 and,skinnies,Battery move to the rear.
 
Right. We did an aluminum one in a guys truck once, and he hated it. Jerked like crazy, just like the manufacturer said it would. Not very recommended in streetcars. I have a SPEC billet steel unit, and love it. Had well over 200K on my engine when I put it in, and immediately noticed it rev'd quicker and rev'd/ran noticeably smoother. The replaceable friction surfaces are the best idea in gear changes since kevlar clutches, this thing rocks. I'd do it again in a heartbeat.
 
Ok... another question for this thread. If I'm not looking for SFI approval for what's basically a street only car... are there any other advantages to a billet steel piece? Is the material harder / does it last longer? Or should I just stick with the regular ole flywheel for my street only app?
 
I agree with Rick on this one. I think that around 6500 and under that a steel flywheel is adequate. But like on my 331 that I rev to 7400, then I would go with aluminum. Even with my aluminum one, I drive the car on the street regularly with no major jerking or chattering. I'm running an aluminum flywheel with a AFM hi-rev clutch and have no drivability problems. But on my 306 I'm running a steel flywheel with a SPEC stage II since I shift it at 6200. It all depends on how high your planning on revving your motor and what your budget dictates as to which flywheel you choose.
