Black 95 GTS has trouble cranking

My black 95 GTS is having trouble cranking. Every once in a while it when you try to crank it it won't turn over. If you leave it alone and let it sit for 20-30 minutes it cranks right up. Just recently while I was driving it the RPM's cut out and it wouldn't respond to the throttle. The check engine light came on and then everything kicked back in and she ran fine. My mechanic replaced the fuel pump, the O2 censors, and the mass air meter and told me it was fixed but obviously it isn't. Does anyone have any ideas?

Oh man first I was thinking... I don't have a problem cranking!

On to your problem... did you try the fuel filter? It does sound like a fuel related problem. Especially as it runs right after you "prime" the pump.

What did you get when you ran the codes after the check engine light came on?

For you starting problem, could be your starter solenoid sticking, or it could just be a bad connection as previously stated. When it won't turn over, do you hear a clicking noise? Or is it just completely dead? If you hear clicking, its likely a bad starter. If no clicking, look at your wiring and grounds and the solenoid as I mentioned.

As for the sudden engine stalling, I wouldn't doubt its a fuel issue. If it were an ignition problem it wouldn't likely kick back in by itself, rather after a prolonged cool-down.
+1 on the fuel filter change.

your cranking problem is probably ignition system related, as regardless if the fuel pump or filter are malfunctioning, the car will still turn over. Next time it does it, hit the starter and see if it helps. you must have paid a pretty penny for those fixes not to have your car run correctly

Spillerz, I had a similar problem with my 95 GTS several years ago. Turned out to be the TFS module and stator inside the distributor. That's where I'd have your mechanic looking. 'Course, it's best to have a Mustang guy working on it, as those are the ones most familiar with your cars particular quirks.

Just my $.02 worth.

Bold = fixed. Happens to the best of us.

When they replaced the fuel pump they replaced the fuel filter to be sure that wasn't the problem. Last time I take it to that mechanic! There's no clicking noise when its trying to crank it just won't quite turn over. When hooked up to the computer it won't throw a bad signal. The only time the check engine lite's come on is when it cut out on me the other day. Thanks for the ideas though!

CEL light came on, and NO codes?

Can you get a fuel pressure guage on the car? Take the hood off, put it in a safe place where you can see it, and go tooling around town. See if the fuel pressure holds while driving.

I must be missing something. If the car wont even turn over (whir whir whir), the issue is with the primary electrical (battery, battery connections, grounds, starter motor, etc). A motor does not need spark or fuel to turn over - it needs enough current to reach a functional starter, to crank.

If it turns over (it does go whir whir whir) but wont catch, that is a separate ball of wax.

Good luck.

exactly. seriously...try hitting the starter and see if it helps...

Sorry about the confusing terminology. It does turn over it just wont start or catch. Fuel pressure is holding right where it should be. I cleaned the battery cables and checked the ground wires. It hasn't left me stranded this weekend but we'll see about later this week. If it leaves me stranded again I'm tempted just to set it on fire :flame: haha

If it cranks, check for spark and injector pulsing when it wont start for you. If missing both, the PIP is likely (this is my hunch about what your issue is). If only spark is missing, look at the TFI, coil, and other ignition stuff.

FWIW, if you havent disconnected the battery since the CEL came on, the code should be buried in there. It might not show an issue while on a scope (if it isnt acting up), but the memory in the puter will recall the code from when it did act up.

Good luck.
