Black Interior Conversion Finally Done!! - PICS

I finally completed my black interior conversion. I don't have any before pics, but it was basically the stock grey interior in rough condition.

Here’s what I did:

- Painted all plastic and vinyl using 50resto paint.
- Replaced carpet and floor mats
- Installed Otto Racing gauge overlay kit.
- Installed billet kit.
- Recovered Headliner, Shifter Bezel, Map Pocket and Upper door panel insert in Black Suede.
- Reupholstered all seats with leather kit from 50resto.
- Replaced all Seat Belts

It was a lot of work but well worth it. Tell me what you guys think.

First of all my car didn’t have leather to begin with it was the grey cloth and it was in fair condition. I just love the look and feel of leather. You can check 50resto out, they have both leather and vinyl kits for the fox. It came with both front and back seat upholstery. I chose the leather because I wasn’t sure how real the vinyl would look. It was $700 for the leather kit.

I work for an engineering supplier and I work on seats a lot. I have an electric hog ring gun at work so it makes the job a lot easier. I have already reupholstered my dads’ Chevelle and let me tell you it was a lot easier. The front seats of the mustang were a pain because you have to completely dismantle them. You also have to cut the holes for the lumbar switch and headrest. It is also necessary to reuse some of the pieces off of the old upholstery as well.

As for the black suede I got 3 yards at the fabric store for about $25. I just used tack it adhesive spray and a little hot glue on the back side of the map pocket and door panel insert. It held up well and looks amazing in person. Oh by the way the 3 yards included me doing the headliner as well and I still had plenty of extra.

Did you use 50restos primer and prep spray cans too?

I need to do this because my ugly blue interior really gets to me.....

Does it really look OEM? I like how it's nice and satin, awesome job man. I'm jealous, lol I don't want blue anymore!!!

I didnt use the primer but I did use the prep cleaner for the vinyl parts.

I also used denatured alcohol to clean the plastic parts. Prepping is very important. I would definetly recommend striping everything out of the car if you can afford not driving it for awhile.

It does look OEM, but I would order all the paint you need at once. I had a problem because I needed to purchase more vinyl paint and when I got it, it didnt match the cans I had before. The cans came from a different lot and the colors were slightly off. Other than that it looks great. The only downfall is that I am afraid of scratching the plastic because it will come off if you scratch it good enough.

I only used one can of vinyl cleaner. The denatured alcohol I used to clean the hard plastic was only a few dollars at the local hardware store.

I used 3 cans of vinyl paint for the door panels and center armrest pad. I got a used black dash pad so I didn’t need to paint it. So 4 cans should definitely be enough.

As for the plastic paint I think I ended up using like 12 cans or so.

This is approximately what I ended up using. So depending on how heavy you apply it you may need more or less. Hopefully this will give you a rough idea. I purchased the 90-92 black paint, and this seems to be more of a flat black look (especially on the plastic). I think it was called ebony. I don’t know how the different years look, but I am happy how mine turned out.

Like I said before, different lots give slightly different shades so be careful. I had to order extra vinyl paint because they didn’t match when I had to order more.
