Well, here goes ... I have started the ball rolling for converting my 410 to be carburated.

You guys will probably shake your heads and tell me that I am making a mistake, but I have my reasons .. the main one being that I will be completely free to decide down the road to pull my engine and transmission and put them into the Fairlane if I decide to sell the Stang and want to keep the motor.

Selling my EFI stuff should be very easy ... I started a thread on Corral a couple of days ago and my inbox was full in a day. It should also pay for all the parts and labor, because all together, the EFI stuff will probably sell for $1500 or so, and the carburated stuff is looking like it will cost a good bit less than that.

So here is where I am ...

I found a guy on Corral who has a 351W RPM Air Gap dual plane intake, Holley Blue pump with regulator, and MSD-8584 distributor for sale for $450 shipped. He also has a Holley carburator, but it does not have the Ford AOD kickdown on it, so even if I could get a conversion thing for it, I don't want it.

Then I asked around about the fuel pump situation and found out that Cartech makes pickups for $100. So I can pull the Walbro out and put this in, and then use an external pump.

The carburator I will use is a Holley 0-80770, 770 CFM. It is the best carb I can find that comes stock with the Ford AOD kickdown. I have a call into Holley to verify that is the right carb for my situation.

So here are the big parts I am going with, as one would find them on Summit:

EDL-7581 - RPM Air Gap intake
Holley 0-80770 - 770CFM Carburator, vacuum secondary, electric choke
HLY-12-802-1 - 110 GPH Fuel pump and regulator
MSD-8584 - Pro-Billet Distributor
CAR-21005 - Cartech fuel tank pickup (not on Summit)

The Cartech guy said the pickup threaded for NPT fittings. The feed side is 3/8" and you use a -8 AN plug style (short threads and an o-ring) fitting. The return line is 1/4". Since this is a returnless system, I will use a 1/4" NPT plug for that. For a return style system, you would use a -6 AN.

Well it turns out that the Ford Kickdown support on Holley carbs is for a C4, not an AOD.

But everyone I talk to says that I can use a Lokar KD-2AODHT cable with essentially any carb and it works.

So I think I'll go with the carb the guy who is selling the other stuff has.

Can this conversion which I presume will not meet emissions standards get inspected in your state?

in my state, they do not do visual inspections, only the roller/sniffer test

i will use "guaranteed to pass", and i have cats so, i might have a fighting chance to pass

if you put it in the fairlane shouldn't you be fine on emissions no matter what you do?

what i was reading online was they started emission checking in the rest of the united states in 68. and california 66.

so shouldn't you be exempt?

edit - what i read was something different, not testing.

but i thought depending on year some older cars are exempt from taking it.

autumn_again, you are right ... if (or when) the engine and tranny go into the fairlane, then emissions should not be an issue. and my main reason for going carb is so that i will be able to transplant it into the fairlane when the time comes.

the other thing i should mention is that my stang just came up for emissions, so i can potentially get it tested before going carb, and then convert it after passing emissions.

either that, or i think there is also a rule in maryland that says if you have put less than 5000 miles on it since the last time it was tested, then you can get an exemption. god knows i have not put many miles on it in the last 2 years BECAUSE THE DAMN THING HAS BEEN SITTING IN THE DRIVEWAY!!!!

I think there are alot better intake choices for your motor than a rpm air gap, a victor junior or super victor would fit the motor alot better from what I can tell at least. Can you give me a link to the cartech fuel pickup? I'm converting to carb with my 94 gt and i would be interested in this, thanks

for my driving style, i believe a rpm air gap is a good fit. and it has a rpm range of 1500-6500. that fairlane weighs around 3700 lbs

here is the link to the cartech pickup. it is about 1/4 of the way down.

i decided to wait until i actually had the stuff off the car before i put it up for sale. otherwise, if i sold the stuff it might be a couple of weeks before i could ship it.
