Well i really cant imagine stretching the bolts at only 8 pounds of boost. I Am gonna stud it next time around though. I will check the bolts length ina bit..

The car has never seen anything about 180 degrees since i put the summit rad in. It was actually at about 135 when it blew on the dyno.

Yes the gasket blew on the top of each firering just like last time, the bottoms all look good. I would rather it be a warped head then block so i dont have to pull the engine, but then again after the heads are milled to repair it my C/R will go up even more.

My friend is coming by ina few with a straight edge and shims and we are gonna check the block and that head, ill let you guys know wut turns up.

I feel your pain... I blew 1 set of head gaskets, a little while after i put my supercharger on.. So i put some copper head gaskets on... they were fine till i ran boost and then i was trailoring it back to the shop... Did this 2 times.. Then i did the smart move by getting my heads o-ringed.. It hasn't done it sence and i push it fairly hard on a regular basis...

You guys say don't o-ring them get the car tuned right... BLAH BLAH BLAH!!! Half the people saying this have little to no experiece with boost. It was the best money I spent on those heads... I had my car tuned right, the gaskets just couldn't handle the small amount of boost i put to them... Weather this was from the heads being slightly warped or even the block the problem is fixed now and i couldn't be happier..

Plus when you get your heads o-ringed they are resurfaced possibly taking out any warping you may have...

Sorry for being so NEGATIVE.

BTW: Did you retorque the head bolts? I mean did you go through them all and after you were done loosen and retighten each one individually? Thats what the instructions for the loc-wire ones i had said to do. (sounded like a good idea too me) Also its suggested on some to let the engine go through a heat cycle and cool off and then retorque them again...

Moneypit, i hear ya on the O ring's. I may do this before i put the heads back on. Most people on turbomustangs.com seem to feel that O ringing with only 10-11 pounds of boost isnt gonna kill a piston. Plus i will have the car tuned properly. I did not retorque the heads. What idd your HG's look like? Did they look like the firering was being pushed out like mine do?

We were scraping the the gasket material off the bottom of the head, and it seemed that when we scraped that area above the cyl there was some graphite that would not come off, like a low spot, right below the waterjacket. Im going to have a machine shop look at that head and see what they think.

Here are some pics of the new blown HG.

This is the HEAD SIDE of the gasket.

This is the block side..

And this is where it cracked the fire ring

Looks identical to the other set. Block or heads? Check it out and let us know.

When my first ones went you could bearly tell where they blew.. The only reason i knew i blew one is because it was pushing antifreeze into my overflow bottle till it came out...

There was just a couple little black spots on the rings. Same way with the copper ones i had...

From looking at yours o-ringing them may not have helped... What octain were you having this tuned on? Man those don't look good at all...

Have you called up AFR to see what they suggest? The reason i went with loc-wire gaskets is because TFS suggested i do so and that would fix the problem... Didn't even ask how bad it was blown or anything, they just said IT WOULD FIX THE PROBLEM.

We should put up a blown headgasket thread. You guys had easy gasket failures. Well this is how it's done.

That's a chunk of the gasket.

It was on 93 octane, the air/fuel was rich, and the pistons have some carbon build up. I know it was not lean/pinging.

I have not called AFR, talking to ed c via email first to see what he suggests.

Someone on TM.com suggested that i torque the heads more, he said it looks like the heads lifted and and the gasket wrinkled. When you studed your heads what did you torque it too?

Can you actually over torque the heads? Say 110/100?

Before my shop did my Vortech, they were gonna do H/C/I for me. They suggested THEN to get O-ringed, even without boost.

Its not a real good idea to torque the small 7/16" head bolts to more than 85ft-lbs. Anything over that should be adapted to 1/2".

I still think there is something wrong with your block or head. You just shouldn't be blowing gaskets that easy.

I agree, im going to have someone look at the head this week and go from there. Im guesiing its the problem area. We'll see.

Yeah, that blew too easy. We've got a local guy running 21 psi (and running 9.8 in the quarter ... damn!) on a stock longblock. Only thing he's blown up was the crank. So you should be able to get this to work without extreme measures.
