Blown Original T-5??????????????????????

Hello fellow stangers got a blown t-5 in an 89 5.0 ran great clutch good for 217,000 miles but guess it was time .
I put it in1st i reved it , it bangged into neutral.
Now when i put it in gear and let clutch out car does not move .
I can hear faint bearing whine same in any gear!
Stangers wat ya think??
used tranny?
New tranny?
Rebuild this tranny?
Another car?
im guessing a used tranny and lot of labor might work
I dont really think i can find a place to do it.
I wonder how much labor?
Anyone changed a t-5 by themself in their garage?
Whay would a shop charge for labor to install a used tranny?
to rebuild and instal
any ideas would be nice Thanx!!!!!!!!

assuming you busted a couple gears, it'll probably be around 400 - 500 to rebuild, depending on how much you've broken. i bought a used one with 2000 miles on it a couple months ago when i blew mine and when i put it in, 2nd was shot. so watch out for deadbeat sellers. i suggest either buying a rebuilt one from a reputable company or person....probably be between 700 - 1000, or have your current one rebuilt. take the transmission out yourself and take it in, it'll save you a lot on labor.

When I did my T5 I just had the car on jack stands in the garage. I was able to get it in and out by myself though a extra set of hands would be really nice. There are any number of things that could be broken to do that. You won't know for sure till it comes out. Personally I don't trust used trannies especially if it's a T5unless its from a car I already know. What is your budget would be a good place to start.

Says 4 hours labor he, says he,s got it down

Maybe rebuiding original might be way to go??

Put it in 4th and see if it moves. If it does, you blew the input shaft.

That means you'll need a new input shaft and a new countegear and a basic rebuild kit.

That also assumes the bits of teeth didn't fly into your other gears and chew them up.

i just finished my trans swap last night. before that the biggest thing I had done was a starter. Just get started and it goes. buddies help though, alot.

took me two days trying to get mine to go back in till a friend came and pushed in the clutch and it slid right in other then that it wasnt bad

Hardest part was getting the headers to line up correctly. I spent more time on that than the putting the actual tranny in.

I'm in the same boat. Went into 3rd and the trans started knocking. I've been on the trans patrol for a week and here's what I run into.

- If you can buy a new one or rebuild all the better.
- You can find a junkyard T5 starting around $100. A fair price for a used, but not abused, less than 80K T5, is between $300 and $500. However you do run the risk of buying a T5 in which you don't know the history off and may end up back on Stangnet biotching about T5 problems.
- If you can buy from someone with a used T5 for sale that is honest and it hasn't been beat on to badly, go for it.

I don't know how you feel about the DYI thing when it comes to gears, some people don't like the idea of working on transmissions. If the DYI transmission fix idea isn't something that you would rather leave to someone else, here are some resources:

A T5 rebuild kit with syncros, bearings and other small parts costs about $160. It does not include any gears or shafts.

http://www.hanlonmotorsports.com/ also has a video on how to rebuild your T5 or Tremec. It costs about $20, and is worth every penny of it.

I did a Tremec 3550 rebuild, and it wasn't that difficult. The video was an immense help, and I would recommend viewing it. At $20, it will give you an opportunity to look and decide for yourself if you think that it is something you want to try to do.

I promise you this T-5 is awesome!!!!!! It was new in May 2006, I bought the car in August 2006, I live in small town so don't drive very far and have only put approx. 3200 miles on tranny if your interested REPLY!

i wouldn't pay a shop to change out a t5. I change them out all the time in the backyard and jack stands.Take about an hour start to finish.

ive swapped some t5's in my 86 and its not big deal, try to find a good 4cyl one they have sweet gear ratios!
