Long title, and most likely a very short answer.

I have now been told 3 different places that I "MUST" bolt the chain down when I pull the motor out.

Person 1: On the heads, very back on one side, and the other side very front

Person 2: On the intake, opp. sides, and offset

Person 3: Get the adapter piece that bolts to the top of the lower intake.

Thanks pal(s)!

I'm pulling tranny out in one piece if that makes a difference.

I used a load leveler, which I'd assume is almost required if pulling the tranny w/ the engine. I did it a couple ways: I bolted one side of the chain to each head front and back and I used grade 8 bolts that threaded in most of the way, but I'm not sure if that's necessary. I did pretty much the same thing the other time, but used the same head for the front and the opposite head for the back.

Here are some pics:

This is all over rated.. I've had great luck with 1 bolt in each head, one in the front and the other in the back diagonal from eachother.. also using header bolts, stock brackets which bolt to the heads with header bolts..

I wouldn't lift it with the intake unless you have the plate the bolts on with all 6 bolts.

PS I did the motor/tranny at once with the stock brackets using header bolts.

i have pulled all my smallblocks with 1 bolt in front of the head and one in the rear even when the trans comes out too its all about chain positioning. all these ways listed above work well i personaly just never felt comfortable lifting a motor by the intake.

I don't think I could have pulled mine out w/ the tranny and the timing cover, etc on the front w/o using the load leveler. I don't feel like trying to angle a 350-400 lb object on a hoist and shove it in an engine bay. I guess w/ more than one person it would be easier, but I did mine all by myself.

Either way, Good Luck:nice:

I use two bolts and a serpentine belt? maybe not the safest route but its quick and easy and i've never had a problem doing this.

Are you kidding?

On 5.0's I usually use the stock brackets that attach with the header bolts. You can get away with 1 bolt at the front and 1 at the back too, but try to use grade 8 if you can.

A load leveler is always helpfull too, especially since you're pulling the tranny too. Any of your 3 methods will work, but personally I don't like using the intake bolts.

Wow,you guys make me feel like I have got my engine in with stone age technology....

10,000lbs tow strap, ceiling hoist,1 bolt on each side of head (4 total) with the strap going around them.I put it in with the trans bolted up.I have also done the same thing, only with the strap runing underneth our intake (super victor W351).

Works just fine,as long as you put a little muscle into it.

I've always just bolted straight to the lower intake manifold and never had a problem. A load leveler is always nice when pulling the trans out with the engine especially if the radiator is still in the car. Nice pic, blkcobra50. Is that your stroker motor going in?

The best way would be to use the stock brackets on a stock engine. There the ones that are bolted to the heads were the headers are! Or if ya know anyone with these barrow them, or any of the sugestions above will work EXCEPT the serpintine belt! I wouldnt want to trust that? peace
