Bouncing Speedometer

The speedometer on my '66 Coupe wavers back and forth. I've got a T5 tranny and put in a new gear to match the 3.55 rear. It seems to have gotten worse since the motor was out, although I only got a couple miles on it since I put it in storage right away. Before, it seemed to only do it at lower speeds. Can anyone tell what causes this and how to correct it?

I think the speedo cable needs to be lubed. Take it off at the speedometer and carefully squirt some powdered graphite in the cable housing. That works sometimes.

Try this first and also look to be sure the cable housing is not bent or kinked. If this doesnt fix it then look at the gear to be sure its not chewing itself up. If all that looks good. Then I would say you will need a speedo head.

1. Remove instrument cluster then use 1-2 drops of sewing machine oil
(3-1 oil) on the bronze bushing at the rear of speedo.

2. Disconnect speedo cable at bottom end, remove speedo gear and then pull speedo cable from sheath leaving sheath in car. Examine the cable for frays. If badly frayed, replace cable. If not badly frayed, clip any frays back. Lubricate cable with the type of lube previously used. If graphite, use graphite. If petroleum based lube, use petroleum based lube...don't mix graphite and petroleum based lube.

3. Reinsert in sheath, fix speedo gear with clip, insert into transmission and fix with cap screw. Install instrument cluster and test.

Some more good advice, I do have to watch my speed though, can't afford a speeding ticket. I've got 7 vehicles on the road, I can imagine what that would do to my rates

BTW, I'd use liquid graphite rather than powdered. Flows better and won't gum-up. I use a product called "Cable-ease" with good results. Available at any good parts store.
