Brake rotor surface rust around the hub

Hello,

My 08 has what looks like surface rust around the hub area of the brake rotors. I live in the Pacfic Northwest so guess why. I've seen this on other Mustangs so it must be somewhat common. I figure I can remove the wheels and remove it with some steel wool, but what can I do to keep it away?

Thanks for any suggestions.

You might be able to steel wool the area, mask off the disc and paint the hub area. When I replaced my rear rotors, I went with Centric rotors (from Tirerack). Centric rotors are powder coated around the edge of the disc and the hub area.

Thanks. That was another thing I was considering, replacement rotors, although a more expensive solution.

this is a common problem,

I paint mine over a weekend. A little sanding, good degreasing and prep, mask well, rattle can automotive paints work well. Be sure to start with a primer.

It is in the details.

Your best bet is engine enamel and primer.

I looked up the Centric rotors as previously mentioned. They aren't as expensive as I expected. About $200 for a set of 4. It also says they have been treated for rust protection. If they are at least as good as the stock set, I'll have to consider this. Even though I only have about 12k on the car, I would assume replacing the pads would be suggested.

I thought the Centric to be better than the stock rotors. I would definitely replace the pads at that time too.
