Brakes Squeek When Not Pressed And It Goes Away When They Are Applied

Ive been having some brake issues that I discussed in a different thread but figured I would make a new one for this problem. My friend did my brakes and turned the rotors and I used Ford pads etc. They didn't stop too good and made a squeak when the brakes are not applied but it goes away when they are applied. It goes faster as I drive faster too.

I had my car in the shop for some other things and had them look at the brakes and they noticed the pads were not making full contact with the rotors and they turned them again. That helped the braking issue but the squeak is still there. Another friend and I had a look after I picked it up and don't see anything rubbing and cant hear the squeak when spinning the rotor on the hub. One thing we noticed is that the pads seem to be resting on the rotor. Are they supposed to be that close? What could cause that type of squeak?

Pads rub on the rotor all the time. There shouldn't be any pressure, but they will rub. I've not done it, but what you could do is remove the pads and file a bevel into the leading edge to see if that helps.

I had my brakes done at a private shop a month ago and they squealed like hell when coming to a stop. The shop tried to fix it but it's still there, albeit not as obnoxious. I think in my case the shop used cheap garbage pads, which is why I won't be having private shops touch my car again. It's Ford parts and at the dealer if I'm not doing it myself from now on.

Did you put shims between the pads and caliper? If not, you might try it and if you did you might try augmenting that with a smear of "no-squeal" compound on the pads. For example:

But would that help for squeaking when NOT applying the brakes or is that just for when you do apply the brakes?

The compound is more likely to help with no- or very light pedal pressure noise than anything that might occur when the pedal is more firmly pressed.
