Bring older paint back to life...

if you're going to do it by by hand you need some no.7 brand rubbing compound, it comes in a green and white can like a paste wax, they have a rubbing compound and a polishing compound you'll need the rubbing compound but you can use both if want.

I've used this stuff before I got a buffer and it does work well. A cheap orbital buffer works well enough to save you some sore elbows and pecs and won't burn paint.

I use a wool pad and a buffer with 3-M products using the methods that bnickel spoke of and yes you can get great results.

If you remove the damaged paint off the top you get to nice paint under it. Just don't go to far.:rlaugh:

The biggest thing is to stay away from the edges. They lose paint the fastest.

Wanna cheat a little? Save a ton of time? Have better results?

This is for the paint oxidized guys. Not paint damaged guys like the cracked but clean paint like on that fender picture above. Ever see a red car that looks like pink chaulk? PERFECT for that. I used to buy cars from the auction that ever one thought would need a repaint and do this with incredible results.

Ok, the big problems when you are NOT a pro.
Hard to get close to things like mirrors and door handles.
blotchy results.
Burn the paint.
Burn through on the edges.
VERY time consuming.
alot of products to buy.

Big problems.

So........................

Try this first. of course try this on a small spot first. Does not seem to work on all paint, so dont waste your time if it does nothing.

Wash the car.
Get a small hand rag. Soak it in WD-40.
Scrub the crap out of the car. Paying special attention to edges, and spots close to body pieces like the mirrors. Mostly paying attention to those because they are so hard to get close to with a buffer in the future.

Now wash it again.

Now wax it with a good CLEANER wax. I like Megiurs. Use a buffer if you can, but doing it by hand works fine.
The more you wax , and the more often you wax it (always with cleaner wax) the better and longer your results will last.

For the naysayers. Try it before you laugh.

you'll probably think i'm nuts but baby oil also works good, especially on red cars and black cars

I had the exact same problem with red on my 90'. It sat outside for a couple years before I bought it off a friend of mine. I used 3m rubbing compound to take off the oxidation which worked really well. I did it by hand because I feel I have a lot more control and I could avoild getting it on the rubber portions around the windows. I went through a bunch of white terry cloth towels which all turned pink and it looks a lot better now. It didn't take a lot of time and I am really pleased with the results.
