Broke the T-5

T-5 Tear Down

Well I did a great job on it. The gears the connect the Input shaft with the Counter shaft have all thier teeth ground up. The thing is the rest of the gears look brand new. So I will need a new input an counter shaft. I don't know if I'm going to do this because the tech I work for said that that kind of damage is caused by the abuse and power I give it. I'll just end doing it again.

I'm going to look into my options.

I looked up www.g-forcetransmissions.com and a complete kit with spur straight cut gears and dogrings cost $1700, and the same kit with syncs is only $1095, and if I send them my T-5 they will put either kit in for $250 which is a really good deal there. I guess they want to install thier own gears. For the trans alone it will cost between $1950 and $1345. Then I will have to call spec and see about a 26 spline clutch disc or if I can send them mine and have it converted.

There are several questions I still have so I plan to call them Monday morning. I don't know how I am going to afford this, maby get a second job, a loan, or a credit card and pay it off ASAP. :( I only want to do this once, and do it right. Oh well, life goes on.

whoa!!! i thought it was 950 for the whole kit?

Maby a few places sells the kit cheaper, I don't know. Oh yeah, I didn't mentioned the mainshaft upgrade. If I can get the money, I'll probally go all out. I'm still looking into the TKO 500 option. I'll need a different bell but I'll be able to keep the same clutch disc. I'll just keep looking into it.

First, talk to the guys who you plan on buying the tranny from. Most I see do NOT recommend the spec clutches. Supposidly they hit too hard and shock the drivetrain and can supposidly help break stuff. I'm looking at centerforce or mcleod with my tko.

Second, I too realized that buying a brand new tranny and going all out was too expensive. Could I afford it? yes. Was it worth it? No. I just sent the payment out to a dude on here for a very low mileage TKO with pro 50 shifter. Wasnt abused and had gm syncromesh fluid used with it. I saved about $600+ by buying used. Since money is tight for ya, consider buying a used 3550 or tko. Since you wanna reuse your current clutch, look for a 3550.

I've done several G-Force kits and other than the normal gear whine that comes with installing straight cut gears, they work great. One of these cars is running 10.30's with a 393 Windsor and full slicks.
If you're planning to drive this on the street, DO NOT GET THE DOG TOOTH SYNCHROS!!!!! The shift like ***** and have horrible street manners! They work fine on a race car that gets power shifted but thats all.
G-Force now has a case too, so I don't see where a lousy-shifting Tremec should even be an option.

I was pretty confused for a while. The G-Force sounds great and maby I should have gone that way but I'm not regreting what I did. I just dug into savings and bought a Tremec TKO 500. I am sure this will last me a while.

Yeah, that should be a killer tranny! I hear ya, I too just dug $1100 out of my savings for my tko and pro 50. Did you get the 10 or the 26 spline input shaft? What clutch you gonna use? What bellhousing and are you gonna index it?
