THe pass side seat in my car will not stay up. The mechanism seems very worn as no amount of pushing the lever down will get it to stay upright if someone leans back. Is there a fix otehr than a new seat ($$ is tight car has lot of issues)? I am tempted to jsut weld the seat back to a constant angle.

You might check to make sure that all the bolts in the pivot mechanism are still there and tight. I sat down in my car after work one day and went to dig my keys out of my pocket and ended up laying flat in the seat when one of the bolts broke. A pain in the butt to get the snapped-off portion out of the seat, but a new bolt and nut fixed it right up.

Wouldn't lubricant worsen the issue?

My Bonneville does something similar. Except my problem is that I can't get the bolts to hold on one side. Getting PO'ed.

Anyway, back to your problem. Pull the cover off and look at what you have. Might be just loose or broken bolt(s).

Good luck.
