well, I went to the track this weekend.. My first run was pretty good (see sig), but my second run sucked. On the first run i was able to drive around the water box, and do a light burn out through first gear (holding break). The second run I was on the tower side, which was IMPOSSIBLE to drive around the water box!! I was a little angry having to drive through it, but thought it would be ok, id just do a longer burn out. So when i start spinning, the tires are wet so it goes to red line really quick. I try to power shift into second, but its a no go; All I get is grind, which is extremely embarrasing. So i try and do it again, and i get the same thing: GRIND. By this time i just want to shoot myself because i look like a dumb@$$.

I was wondering if anyone had a better technique? Maybe a more appropriate RPM to switch into 2nd gear (i was doing 5500)? any advice would be great! They arent DR, just street tires (which are crap). Also how hard is this on my clutch? Its not something i would do everyday, just at the track.

Try dropping it in second instead.

Drag racing kills the car anyways, so dropping second won't be much worse.

I run my RPM's up to around 2500 +/- then drop the clutch and use my left foot to hold the break (one smooth motion). If you play with the throttle you could hold you car in one spot for hours...

Just buy some DR's and forget the burnout.

Buy a line lock to lock up your front brakes!

When i run at the track, i do a 1st gear burn out for about 3 seconds on street tires. If i do it in 2nd gear it gets them too hot and they slip/spin off the line..
As for how to do it, i would start in 2nd, rev it up to 4000+ and pop the clutch. Then get on the breaks just a tad with your left foot to stop you from rolling fowards.

Looking at your sig, I would guess that you're running regular radials. In that case, I wouldn't do much of one at all. Just enough to clean the fluff off of the tires....that's it. Heating radial tires up makes them greasy and is actually worse for traction. The only time that I'll heat regular radials at all is if it's a cold day at the track, otherwise...skip the burn out.

Your second run probably couldn't have been saved regardless. Even if you hadn't of heated the tires right up, your front tires probably carried enough water to the line to screw your hole shot anyway. As for your grinding into second......well, that's just you blowing your wad when the pressure was on.
