I have an '89 notch with a built, high compression 306 a t5 and 4.10 rear gears. It has a centerforce dual friction clutch. I tried twice today to do a burnout on the street by putting the car in 2nd gear and revving to 5,000 rpm and dropping the clutch. Both times, it revved like the car was spinning the tires but the car was just hooking and taking off without even a tire chirp. Afterwords, it smelled like the clutch was burning up. But if I just start out in first gear from a stop and really get on it, the car will spin tires in first and then hook up good in 2nd gear and on and the clutch won't slip at all. Do I just get too good of traction that the clutch can't handle it and this is normal or is it time for a new clutch?

if it was hooking on ur clutch drop from 5k in 2nd gear... I would think it should bog really bad (unless ur just making that much power, or have really steep gears)
I dropped the clutch at 5k rpm and it stayed up there around 5k rpm but the tires weren't spinning and the car was launching forward and then the rpms started to go up and I shifted into 3rd. I'm wondering if the clutch needs replaced or just adjusted. Is a second gear burnout not a good idea on the street? It's okay in first gear. If the clutch was bad, you would think that it would slip more in first than second, right?
Not so much hooking, it was just taking off very quickly but not kicking the tires loose. Is it just my driving? Do I need more throttle to get the tires to spin?
