Burning Out!

With my new motor i can do a pretty nice burn out when i punch it off of a red light or stop sign. But i've seen a lot of cars they can literally smoke their tires at a launch. At what HP / Torque rating can this type of smoking launch normally be achieved at?

I just dropped in a 347 with Performer RPM heads and a pretty mild hydrolic roller cam. Also put in a performance AOD trans. Only thing i need to do still is change the rear end, cause i'm still using the stock peg leg 8" rear. My carb is also only a 570 Holley.

Basically i'm wondering what mods i can do to give my car a meaner burn out from a launch, but still but a very streetable car. Would a 9" rear with deeper gears burn more rubber? Or would the extra traction from the posi actually make it burn less? Would an aluminum drive shaft help? My cam is mild so i have a very smooth idle and i'd rather not change it out, i'm assuming this is working against me also. Also since i'm using an auto instead of a stick i guess that make its harder. Would a bigger carb than a 570 help?

I never take this car to the track so i'm looking to improve 1/4 mile times really. I know smoking tires proabally shouldn't be my main concern im just looking to add a lil more show off factor. :D

in my opinion, yes, but i guess it depends on where your car starts building torque............that is what i have and it locks up before my engine gets to making much ....................

i'm still learning how to smoke them.............:D ...........although from what i've heard, once you get them spinning you should be able to learn how to keep them spinning :shrug:
 
.....and all this time I have been trying to learn how to get mine not to "burn the tires"

The only place my car hooks is at the track and with my new stall / transbrake and more cam I'm not so sure it will hook there anymore on my 10.5" slicks...

Put in a line lock and you'll be able to fry the tires down to the rim with no problem. I have one in my daily driver and the track car. I won't build a car without it. Only $40.

Luckily the rear brakes only do about 10% of the braking....

Steeper gears would probably be the easiest thing to install that would make burnouts easier by the largest margin.

I tried a brake stand once when I still had dried-out 205s on my '68. Punching it hard w/o a clutch dump would still get the passenger side smoking from a roll. Thats in 1st with 3.00s and an open 8". I suspect that after I put a 3.55 T-lok 9" under it, I'll have problems even with the 225s. Mods in sig.

I dunno about you guys, but I would rather get moving than sit and burn up my tires....

The line lock is not ON/OFF. You can set it with just a little pressure if you want. It only holds the amount of braking force that you give it. I can do a nice long burnout over a great distance using the line lock. It is by far the cheapest way to get a good burnout. Way cheaper than changing gears or any motor mods. I put one in a 2 door '64 Falcon with a stock 6cyl. It would burn the right rear tire all the way down the street and WOW the crowd.

All done on private property.

Hang on, wouldn't the smokiest startoff burnout (without holding the brake and trying to burn it up) occur with a good engine (what he has now) and the opposite gearing - like 3.00:1? Once the tyres have broken free, this gearing is going to get the highest wheel speed going on.

I wouldn't recommend that sort of gearing though as for any other purpose (perhaps except top speed runs) it is going to suck.
