Buying an IPod, a brother needs some advice

We are going to buy an IPod for my wifes 9 year old, and i have never researched these things... can anyone tell me the differences and compatibility issues i might run into? thanks, i really appreiate it.

for the most part strype hit the nail on the head but if i were to go about it all again i would buy another brand since the ipod i had sucked. i always was having to reboot it and itunes blows.
My brother has a sandisk and it works great without a catch but i guess ipod has the video thing now so that is a huge purk. so i say go with the ipod but just keep in mind itunes is a crappy program and its not drag and drop

Is there a reason to get an actual iPod? Why not just an mp3 player from another manufacturer? Apple has people brainwashed, I fear, into believing theirs is the only device to buy for portable music.

We have a Philips mp3 player and it rocks -- the software is just as easy to use as iTunes.

Things to think about:

durability
rechargability
size (overall dimensions)
storage capacity (how many songs it'll hold)

I have a 20gig Ipod that is about 3 years old now and it's still going strong. The new NANO's are so small that I would worry about them being broken or stepped on. I like the Ipod but that doesn't mean you have to shop for an apple product like Tim mentioned.

I have a 3rd Gen. iPod 10GB. I replaced the battery just recently.

It froze up one time at the beginning of this year, and I had to reinstall all of my music.

iTunes is drag and drop...

Is it gonna be for music and video or just music? Ipods are just living off of the name. There are many major memory makers (Ultra & Sandisk of the top of my head) as well as household names like Sony, Phillips etc. that have just as good if not better MP3 players / video players. Basically you use your existing media or buy it or steal it. If its just gonna be for music I would recommend another brand other than Apple due to price. And get at least 512 MB drive personally I wouldn't go smaller than 1 Gig though. This place http://www.tigerdirect.com/ I buy tons of stuff from them.

If I was brainwashed I wouldn''t have said that it froze up, or that I had to replace 10GB worth of music that wouldn't play. Or that there is a little one pixel black horrizontal line that appears on the screen every other week...

I don't think it is the best option out there, but I got it as a gift in 2002, and haven't had a reason to get anything else for 3 years.

The replacement battery was $15, and I only replaced it because it bumped the battery life from 6-8 to more like 12-15 hours.

It sucks that there isn't a color screen on mine, but it is old.

Granted you have to take care of you stuff.

This is the actual condition my iPod is in 3 years later.

you should put it back in the case, maybe one day it will become a collectors item like the original Optimus Prime action figure and you can sell that gift for $$$!

There are definently a ton of MP3 players out there. Just make sure you get something durable. There is no sense in spending realitivly big $$ on a piece of equipment just to break it into peices in 6 months.

More importantly i wouldn't buy a 9 year old an ipod. I would suggest buying something cheaper by another brand name.

Honestly, shes just really starting to get into music (ive been trying to influence her as much as possible) and she doesnt need something that is all about the name, but i do want something that is reliable that im not going to have to take back.

its either this or a laptop... i know shell get use out of the laptop, but we already have one, plus a PC, so honestly, i dont wanna have to wireless that one too, and have to worry about it...

all in all, i talked the wife into getting her an ipod or something close to it. so i was just trying to get an idea of whats out there now.. i really appreciate all the responses wether positive or negative..

far... id goto walmart and get a 9year old a rca mp3 player... ipods = $$$ unless you think a 9 year old is ready.. just get a 4G ipod it holds 900 songs! and run about 180 i think, but the mp3 player runs the same way for 30 bucks a stock rca hold about 15 songs, get a chip about 40 bucks and you've only spent 70 dollars and it'll hold close to the same amount of songs for less money.. personally i wouldnt put anything over $100 in the hands of a 9year old... but its not my kid! try amazon.com for ipods... walmart bestbuy for mp3 players!

Do NOT buy an i pod. I've never had such a p.o.s. in my life. I've had to send mine back in several times. I just got it back from Apple about a month ago and now the stupid **** dont work!! and warranty expired

I started with an iriver MP3 Player and it worked okay but now i have an ipod and its so much easier to use and i don't mind dishing out the extra cash for it. One thing i would like to add is that unless your a complete music freak and you listen to your entire CD/Music collection every week there is no need to hold 50,000 songs. Besides if you store that many songs on your ipod it drains the hell out of the ipod. I got my fiance the 60MB Video for her college graduation gift and we watched 1 one hour show on it and mind you we started with a fully charged battery and by the time it was over the battery was 3/4 gone. Maybe ours is defective but that is just my experience. I now own a 10MB that holds i think 1,500 and even that is too much for me.

Cheap (Now)

My GF has an iPod Shuffle 1GB, and it works in different ways, that can be seen by some as a plus.

You can plug it into the computer at school, work, ect. and access your files, and play music. Kinda like a portable harddrive for info,data,files, plus by plugging it in you charge it at the same time.

But it doesn't have a screen which sucks hard, but if you only have 1GB to work with you better like all the songs on the playlist anyways.
