Bypass smog pump on 95 Cobra

I tried searching this, but found so many different answers, I wasn't sure what to get out of them. Anyway, I have a 95 Cobra with stock pulleys. I want to run a short belt to eliminate the smog pump ONLY. I am capping off the smog tube coming from the prochamber. I need to know what belt to get to bypass the smog pump, and what (if necessary) the new belt routing will need to be. I am not removing the smog pump, as I may be moving to Pennsylvania sometime in the future, and they have emissions testing. Do I just need to cap off the tube coming out of the smog pump? Dan, I dont know (seems to me that Danny [Wytstang] has posted diagrams before with belt lengths). But I would caution that an A.I.R. pump that is bypassed has a better chance of seizing on you in the future if it is hooked back up.

The short-belt is questionable. People have mentioned problems with them fitting or burning up or other from what I remember. Just buy a smog delete pulley and bolt it on and use your existing belt and be done with it. Put it back in later if you feel like it.

Good luck moving to PA. It's the communist state if you ask me. The "gustopo" requires YOU to PAY take your car into the shop every 6mos to a year or something so some mechanic can put his HANDS on YOUR baby and tell you exactly what you will and will not do to your car and report your @$$ if he don't like you. Not to mention emission checks on top of that. Not to mention some of the local governments and their quirky regulations that make you pay $$ for stupid stuff. No offense to you at all by the way. I just hate PA for these reasons.

My bro had a car lowered by only 1.5" with better handling springs. They made him take the springs off and put it back to factory. The mchanic made some buck on the system though..

Yea I don't want to live in PA, I just might have to for a job.

Anyway, about the air pump, can I just keep it hooked up and not have it go to the exhaust?

The reason I want to do this is I got a Mac ProChamber and I don't want to fab up the air tube to go from the smog pump to the pipe. I could buy Silicone Hi-Temp hose, but I need roughly 5 feet of it and it costs $9 per foot. I was gonna just plug the tube comin out of the exhaust, then bypass the smog pump. Is it maybe also possible to just have a piece of heater hose run down from the smog pump to below the car and just have it vent to the atmosphere?

I have a smog pump delete pulley I no longer use if you are interested.

I dont see why you cant have the smog pump vent into the atmosphere. I would probably put a filter of sorts on the end to keep crud out of there, as well as muffle it a little (you might hear some whirring coming out of the hose).

I didnt quite follow, but you wouldnt want to consider running a bare hose from the exhaust to the pump. You atleast need the check valve in series or the first time you get a backfire in the exhaust, it can take out the pump (the checkvalve is there to prevent the shockwave from reaching the pump). That's neither here nor there..............

I wonder what kind of filter I could put at the end? Maybe a breather filter? I was going to re-use the check valve that is already on the car by the way, but I have scrapped the idea of running a hose up to the smog pump, since it is not serving any purpose whatsoever. As far as the delete pulley, Black Stampede, I would take you up on that, but I don't want to remove the smog pump in case I need to have it in the future. It would save me the trouble of reinstalling everything. I'm not interested in taking it off for weight savings because I VERY rarely ever race the car.

Also, since I am still considering bypassing the pump, like I said earlier does anyone have the belt size for doing that? I may just try that for a while. I saw about 3 different belt sizes in my search.

smog something or others, wow its gonna suck it i ever need to make my car smog legal again.
you know thats bs. cars can run clean and not have all that maybe a little sniffer test. or if your car looks like a chimney then you should get your car towed but stop harrasing the sports cars. Even would consider a higher license plate fee for cars that wish not to comply with smog laws. whatever what do I know...Its true our enviorment is important and needs to be preserved but there are alot of extremist governments in different states around the US.

I was actually thinking of something more along the lines of a resonator. You certainly could try a cheap breather first, and if it's loud, a resonator of some sort would work (I havent thought much about it, but perhaps something used on industrial air compressors). Your breather idea could very well work though (esp if you have a loud exhaust).

I think I once looked into bypassing the smog pump with stock pulleys (I was feelin like mine was about to seize) and most of the info I found was for U/D's and a short belt.

You can just bypass the smog, i have had mine bypassed for a long time with no problems, not sure about it seizing up though. But the belt will be fine just bypassing it.

PA is not as strict as some people think. The 1 year inspection is possibly changing to 2 years, and they may do away with emissions all together. In Erie, we only have a visual inspection and have the option to go emissions exempt if you drive under 5,000 miles/year. I removed my smog pump and will be getting inspected in April. Im not worried about it passing because I know it will. I am keeping the smog stuff though, so if I ever need it again I have it.

Mine is bypassed right now, as well as the a/c. Well, I guess you could call it bypassed, neither are on the motor at all anymore Sooooo much more room. . .

Thanks for the help guys. I went out today and got an 895K6 belt, which is what I found to be the most commonly recommended belt to use. I hear it can be a bi*** to get on but at least it wont be too loose. I'm also just gonna plug off the smog tube comin out of the Prochamber. Getting my car aligned on Tuesday morning, then that afternoon I should be puttin on the P/C and listenin to its sweet sweet sounds by that night

FWIW on the plug for your Prochmbr...I used the one in the middle...its a 5/8 cap from Home Depot....I just slid over the pipe...a tad to loose so I mixed up some JB Weld, filled it some and slid it on and let it dry o/nite....Been there for 3 yrs leakfree..

For a quickie you can just plug the end of a pc of heater hose and clamp that on...

Hey one last question guys. Just to re-state my plan, I am going to run a short belt and plug the spout in the ProChamber. The thing I'm not sure about is the lines running from the back of the passenger side head. I was gonna plug the end of the hose coming out of the smog pump to keep dirt and dust out, but if I keep the line connected from the back of the head, is there going to be a pressure build up in the smog pump from that line, since I will have the discharge tube plugged off?

if you take the smog pump out, you can remove everything. on mine, the tube going to the heads are completely gone and the holes are plugged, the pump is replaced with an idler, all the vacuum lines are either removed altogether or plugged, and the tube going to the midpipe is completely gone as well. mine wasnt removed for a performance gain, but more to clean up the engine bay of unnecessary stuff since i no longer have cats and the smog pump wasnt providing any benefit to the cars longevity. the smog pump doesnt put much drag on the motor. if emissions necessity needs you to have it, i would just hook it up normally and leave it alone since you wont notice any gain at all by removing it.
