C-4 problem, PLEASE Help!!!

My car is sitting on 4 jackstands, all wheels in the air.

A week ago I started the car and put it into gear and the tires turned normally.
the speedo was a smooth 5mph or so.

Now I go out to my car yesterday and started it up, with the shifter in park the back tires are turning slowly, I hit the gas and they don't go any faster, just a constant "free wheel" if you will. When I select a gear including neutral or reverse, nothing happens. The tires continue to turn but do not respond to the accelerator. Also the speedo is jumpy, when it was smooth before.
I also unhooked the shifter and tried to manually shift the gears with the same results...

I run a 10" stall, but nothing crazy, does the tranny have to have a load on it to get it cooperate or I am I in big trouble here? Like I said before, the C-4 was working fine a week ago, and I have not driven it since that time???

Any help is appreciated.

what size stall do you have...rpm?

Its a TCI Street Fighter, I believe it is about 3000rpm stall, I bought it a few years ago so I can't remember exactly.

i'd start by putting the car on the ground and trying it before you start thinking some thing is wrong.

also check your fluid level after its warmed up.

Will do thanks, I know the fluid level is good (I just filled it with new stuff) but I have not run the motor very long yet so the warmup thing could be part of it for sure.

Thanks, but this is behind a 426W stroker motor. If I need a new trans I will go with PA or someone. Just don't want to do that unless I have no choice.

Does the car drive still???Sounds like its just the stall.Do you expect the wheels to spin while being in park????That doesnt sound too safe to have them spin while in park????The speedo cable probably needs to be lubed or replced,most of them jump from age.

Sounds to me like its in nuetral all the time.OR, The first time you started it with the rear tires off the ground and spun the tires did you hit the brakes before you slamed it back into park, if not then you probably done some internal damage.

def. get it on the ground before u make any conclusions. trannys can do weird things with no resistance, like when i installed my new c4, not only did the wheels not spin when off the ground(not enough line pressure) the wouldnt spin until i set the car down. now they will ,but the tranny needed some load i guess at first to build pressure to start turning the converter. also, that post byMrMustangVert was sloppy. i doubt u need a new transmission, especially from a 6 banger.

Why would he want another c4 when he allready has one lol

My buddies car which had about the same converter did the same thing, just drop it doen drive it before you jump to any conclusions bro

Thanks for the replies, however, I had it on the ground in the first place and it went nowhere! Thats why I lifted it and found the current problems.

I think I agree with the above post that it is stuck in neutral or something, also the speedo cable and gear and spedomoter are all brand new, so they should be good as well.

Any other thoughts are still welcome.
Sorry I didn't clarify that I had the car on the grounf in the first place. this is very troubling...

well the only other thing which has actually already been mentioned is to make certain there is enough fluid in it. you have to check the level when its running and in drive (have a helper). It may be stuck in neutral like u said, but without enough fluid it wont turn either. just a thought before things get real expensive

Have you had the valvebody off? Done any work on the shifter or linkage? Worked on any part of the car? Any strange noise? Wrong input shaft?

When its in park are both wheels rotating in the same or opposite direction?

The valvebody has not been touched.
I took the tail housing off to get the old speedo gear out of there, it fell off removing the speedo cable.
I have crawled under the car and shifted manually, and it does click through the gears, but obviously it is not actually moving through the gears.
In Park both tires turn in the same forward direction, no difference than all the other gears.

I may not have had the car runnig long enough yet to get the pressure built up, but I never seemed to have any troubles before.

The motor and tranny were removed from the car but nothing was done to the tranny, I just replaced the heads on the motor and painted the engine bay, then put it all back in. I made sure the torque converter had fluid in it as well when re-installing it...

Did the T/C properly engage the pump? How many times did you spin it and index it before being confident it was fully engaged?

have you driven the car with that T/C before or is it new?Your stall might be about 2500-3000,but it could be higher with your engine.Sorry if these are stupid questions.

I'm afraid I don't know what this means. I mounted the motor and tranny all together outside of the car, it seemed to go in nice and smooth. Can you explain the indexing part and how to do it? I guess I could have done something on that end...


The t/c is not new, same one I have been running for a while now. No problems before with it. I think Krash Kendall may be on to something though...
