I'm not the consummate ford guy here, even though thats all I own! Need some help om a project...I am installing a 1990 mustang motor into a 78 cobra. I have the smaller bell housing already, and a smaller flex plate, but not sure if the earlier plate fromthe original motor will throw the balance off on the 90 motor. Any thoughts would be REALLY appreciated! I know there have been a ton of C-4 swaps done but finding someone to ask doesnt happen that easily at the end of October- everybody is sleeping for the winter! Thanks!!!

Just be sure to use the right vibration dampner to match the flexplate. Have Fun,

He hit it on the head....just match the flywheel balance to the right dampener....i forget the numbers right off but later 302s used different balance dampeners than the older ones so if you have an older flywheel then you'll need to get one with a different balance or switch the balance of the dampener.

Most older 302s that are pre 5.0 HOs use a 28oz imbalance while the 5.0 HOs use a 50oz imbalance. More than likely the flexplate that you have is a 28oz and you will need to change the balancer on the engine to a 28oz balancer.

You need a late model 5.0 style 50 oz damper and flexplate.

My guess is that you need a 157 tooth, small style flexplate. They should be available from aftermarket sources easily.

If you use the older style you will vibrate the engine to pieces.
