Hey guys...

We just finished installing a new C4 in my friend's '86 coupe and we have issues.

We have reverse, but no drive.None at all.Doesn't even try. Reverse engages immediately, but drive is simply not there.

This is supposed to be a low-mileage rebuild with good parts, cheetah valvebody and an 10" converter. The seller maintained that it worked perfectly when removed, but we didn't ask how long ago that was.

The fluid that we drained out looked good, there was no appreciable residue in the pan, so I'm hoping it's not clutches gone.

I'm fairly knowledgable about transmissions, so what things should we look for first as far as possible valvebody problems, etc?

Any advice is greatly appreciated..thanks.

I am not that familiar with the internal workings of auto transmissions, but i installed a c4 in my car. I filled the converter when i installed it and filled the oil to the recommended level. When i first put the car in drive (1st), it did not engage right away, i had to let it set there for a few seconds before first engaged. After that it was fine, just seemed like it need to build pressure to get the clutches to engage. How long did you leave it in drive the first time? Dont know if that is your problem or not, but figure its worth a shot!

just make sure you have enough fluid in it like the other guys said. as far as valve body problems the only thing that would happen is the gasket could blow out....i had that happen on mine and i had no 3rd gear or you can get a stuck valve but im guessing it has a manual valve body in it right? if it does make sure the linkage is adjusted correctly. and one more thing to think about......im not familiar with the cheetah valve bodies but if its a high performance manual valve body you will definetly need a deep pan if you dont already have one....the reason being that the pump will pull more fluid from the pan to engage the clutches better (raise the line pressure) and you will have a problem with sucking the pan dry. that happened to me as well with my c4
