C4 Swap questions...

I have my motor built now and I really want to get the thing in the engine compartment. I’m going to run an AOD eventually, but I need to buy a manual valve body and a torque converter. I don’t have the money to buy those right now (close to $1000).

My question is: Can I just install my original C4 for right now? I’m not sure if the stock 5.0L flex plate will work or not? Which starter would I use? I would imagine the one that is on the C4 right now.

I just want to get this beast running. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

P.S. I did a search. It's hard to find C4 information as C4 is under word size limit.
 
depends on the balance of the motor. is it the 347. most of the rotating assemblies ive seen are 28oz balance. you need to find out what your balance is. im thinking it could only be 1 of 3. 28,50 or 0. make sure which ever flexplate your gonna use that you have the right bell housing that will clear the flexplate. check your old motor and see how many teeth were on the flexplate. should be 157 or 164 teeth. bellhousing and flexplate need to match as well as the flexplate to motor as far as balance goes. ford racing has whatever you may need.
 
Well, when I had the motor built, I had the guy use a stock '90 5.0L flywheel (50 oz.) and also the dampner from the same motor. Are you telling me that my cranks and stuff might be balanced to something else? Sorry for my ignorance...just a bit confused.

I'm sure the flexplate is right for the motor. But what my question is, is on a stock 5.0L if you switch to a C4 tranny do you have to do anything besides throw the C4 converter on and bolt the thing together.

I will have to count the teeth and see if it comes out the same. Do you count the teeth to make sure it won't be to big for the bellhousing?

Can I use the AOD bellhousing with the C4 tranny or am I just full of "it"? lol

Before I start let me explain the different C-4's.There are case fill and pan fill C-4's and the bellhousings are not interchangeable between them.The pan fill C-4's were only available with the larger 164 tooth bellhousing.The case fill C-4's were made with either a 157 tooth,164 tooth or 143 tooth Mustang II flexplate.The 164 tooth flexplates used a converter with a bolt pattern of 11.4",the 157 tooth C-4's used a converter with 10.5" bolt pattern.C-4's made before 1970 used a 24 spline input shaft, after 1970 used a 26 spline input shaft.The blockplate has to match the bellhousing, the 164 tooth bells are bigger than the 157 tooth ones and the starter is located farther out to compensate.The first thing you have to do is find out what the balance of your new motor is.If it is 28 oz and the motor that you had in the car before was a 289, a 302 made before 1981,a 351w or a 351c then you are home free and can just install the blockplate and flexplate from the previous motor and bolt it to the C-4.If the balance of the new motor is 50 oz count the number of teeth on your old flexplate.It should be 157 or 164 tooth.(There were some 160 tooth flexplates made around 1967 and if you have one then pretend it is 157 tooth as the same info applies).If you have 157 teeth then the easiest thing to do is find a 50 oz 157 tooth C-4 flexplate which is only available in the aftermarket.Otherwise you can swap out your 157 tooth C-4 bellhousing ,converter and blockplate for a 164 tooth C-4 bellhousing ,blockplate,converter with an 11.4" bolt pattern and input spline that matches your C-4 and 164 tooth 50 oz flexplate.The only advantage to the second choice is that in most cases you can use an AOD flexplate as they are 164 tooth 50 oz.If your new motor is 0 balanced then you will have to find a 0 balanced flexplate that matches the tooth count of your bellhousing.On an AOD the bellhousing is part of the case so it can't be removed.
