c4 to t5 conversion

First I'll tell you what I have. I have a 67 mustang coupe with a brand new 302 pushing about 280 RWHP. I have a C4 in it right now and the shifts from 2-3 are starting to get very screwy so I'm trading up. I've decided to put in a t-5 world class and have been looking around. I have looked at the darhorseperformance swap kits but they are a little pricey. Can anyone tell me what I need to do this. Obviously I know I need:
transmission
T5 cross member
New bell housing
shorten the drive shaft
clutch and brake pedals
t5 conversion kit from someone like cal mustang or mustang depot.

What else? I have heard I have to shorten the yolk. I'm also wondering with the goal of 400RWHP is the world class t5 going to hold up? I am on a budget of about 4G's for the whole thing including installation, so I'd also like to know of budget cuts I can make for tollerabley used parts instead of new. Any tips or info from other people who have done this would be appreciated. Also if there is a specific model of the T5 I need to put in to fit my 302 as opposed to one that would fit a new engine, please post.
For those that will flame me, I have searched the forums but did not find everything I want to know.
 
On a 68 Fastback we did NOT need to shorten the driveshaft, toploader and C4 drive shaft are the same shaft in the carl (did a C4 to Toploader swap years ago, now its a T5).

Though it is a GT, we had a flywheel issue, original was 164 rather then 157 tooth that fits in the T5 Bellhousing (164 DOES NOT fit).

Rest of it is rather straight forward, did it on the floor in a double garage over a weekend.
 
Type of clutch linkage is another decision. Assuming you're going with a T5 bellhousing (you can use a toploader bell but then you'll need to use the equalizer bar clutch linkage and I don't think you want that), you can use either a cable or hydraulic. Both have their issues and strengths. There are plenty of kits on the market for both, too.
 
One thing you'll need for sure is PATIENCE.

I've been working on my swap for a month now... and with my kids or other interrupting me along with waiting for parts and little gremlins popping up.

You'd be smart to spend alot of time on line reading.

If you're going solo... don't expect it to be easy. But I don't want to scare anyone off either. I'm at about 90% and I'm pretty pumped up about it.

Actually the Online reading is all a little False, the truth and internet seems NOT to go hand in hand.

I found that the Premade crossmember is what sped my process up, and the use of a good tranny jack. (floor model) I had to lift the car up about 24" off the ground to use it, but was well worth it.

Don't get a T5 conversion kit -
Get a World Class T5 or TKO
Used 5.0 bellhousing w/the T5
New Flywheel from Summit or Jegs that is both 28oz and accepts a late model King Cobra Clutch kit.
Get a hydraulic JMC clutch kit so you never have to worry about a cable getting toasted on the headers
get a new C4 tranny mount
Do you have power brakes now? If not, something you may want to consider since you will have the master cylinder out anyway when you change the pedals out.

Right... don't mind what people may say on the internet... cuz we may just be "false". Go ahead and rip out your C4 and just wing it. Who needs research?? You may finish up by the end of the year....

Truth man, some of the stuff listed on the net is either false, only half the full picture, or just hearsay.

and you can't say you haven't run it to this.
NOTHING ANYWHERE said anything on Moderdriveline's site about possible different flywheel sizes...............imbalance factor yes, but not physical sizes!!!!!
and they are supposed to be the ONES.
Cost over run, if that and a proper starter wasn't budgetted for!!!!
So yes DON'T believe everything, its only half the story!

So this is why I wanted to post this thread. My C4 is crapping out and I need to replace it in the next 2 weeks. I don't want to buy a MDL or DHP kit if I can just get a list from one of you guys and get everything separetely if it is cheaper. and I have heard that I do have to shorten the drive shaft, I don't have to shorten the drive shaft, there are specific T5 models with shorter input shafts that make it so I don't have to change the driveshaft, getting confused... clowns are coming for me... clowns are coming for me..... MOMMY! Anyone that can give me a full list, I am not doing the work myself, but I am going to have to collect everything I need.

Has anyone purchased the darkhorseperformance kit or the moderndriveline kit for C4 to T5 conversion? If so which one and how was the customer service and shipping times and the product? I'm thinking that I' just going to buy a kit since it is easier, anyone have any ideas?

your C4 starter will work fine. The 5.0 flywheel is 10.5" diameter and the one to use. But that's JMO :D

No, the "World Class" new, used, or rebuilt will do.

As for the original poster.

I have a late model bellhousing with my T5.

I used a Modern Driveline crossmember and clutch cable kit.

I had to shorten my driveshaft (actually got a custom aluminum one) but I also have a 9 inch rear end.

This setup works well together.

I agree that you need to check that the flywheel is the right balance for the engine.
