I would love to know what the hp loss is like from a t5 to a c4...

if anyone could make a post with accurate knowledge, i would be very grateful. I am switching from a t5 to a built c4 and I am curious...

I'll take the first stab at it...

T-5 to AOD increase in drag is around 5%

DTL (T-5) = 15%
DTL (AOD) = 20% sometimes greater depending on the condition of the transmission

A C4 is going to be in the same neighborhood of DTL as the AOD

i've heard that the c4 has less parasitic drag than AOD's? is this correct?

:Word: I have always heard that all autos lose about the same amount.

Instead of switchin to auto u can get a tranny that will hold more power. like the tremec 500 or 600. Nothin like switchin ur own gears!!!

Those are the numbers i have heard. I'm curious why your switching to auto? I personally think manual trans is the way to go unless you had an insane combo that made manual unstreetable. Thats JMO, curious to know what you think.

there was a nice article a few months back in car craft i believe that talked about drive train losses. it turns out Auto's that are built(i.e. shift kits and high stall TQ) do not lose much if any more then a 4 spd manual. seems to me they came to be around the same lose of 18% through drive train. it is another story for a non built auto.

i love driving a 5 spd and i loved my car when it had the tko in it. but since i put the c4 in it, it doesnt compare. maybe it was just me and i couldnt drive a manual that well but i find it hard to believe that anyone could shift faster than an auto with a shift kit and stall. my car is definetly faster off the line and on the top end with the c4 than it was with the tko 500

I was told these one time by a very well known tuner who is on a dyno all day...

15-17% T-5
17-21% for a Tremec 3550/TKO
20-25% for a C-4
25-28% for a AOD/AODE

Auto's have the largest variances since the internals and converter have a direct effect on the loss.

My combo (carbed, n/a 580hp 418) was a riot on the street with the stick. Street manners and a mid 11 second et with mid 10 second mph(11.55@126.66mph) made me go with the C4. I sold the tremec before I broke it and have never been happier with the car, it's the best it's ever been on the street with this motor. Just me though.
Mike.

It's a built c4 ... 3500 stall non lockup, kevlar clutchs, hardened internals / input shaft, huge b&m cooler, manual vavle body reverse pattern, shift kit, hurst quarter stick, im sure there is stuff im forgetting about it. it should be good to 500rwhp auto numbers, which will be about where I will be on 12 psi.

for the 5 speed comment, after only being able to do 1 gear pulls on my t5 with my car ON MOTOR in fear it was going to lite up, i am SURE an agressive shift kitted manual valve body auto with a nice stall will make me MUCH happier...

You will lose about 3-4% by going from a T-5 to an automatic.

My car with an AOD and full exhaust made 200hp and 265 tq, with a T-5 and pretty much no other changes it made 220hp and 285tq.

Time for a little thread jack...

What are the options to eliminate the shifter shuffle in an AOD car. I'm working on getting my 86 back on the road and Im sticking with the AOD but I dont have much to spend on it. Are there any "shift kits" that work well for this or does it involve an entire new valve body. Full manual wouldnt bother me either as long as I can lose the onedeeone action. I also saw one time where a guy had a button that I guess locked out OD. Anybody know anything about that and exactly how it works.

And BTW...I have a complete fresh C4 setup for sale if anybody is looking.

Here is a good site worth reading about the AOD:http://www.fordmuscle.com/archives/2000/04/shiftkit/index.shtml

good read

i can't believe what i'm seeing- should of went to the 5speed swap.

i swapped from a C4 to an AOD in my 67 mustang about 2 years ago along with upgrading to a 9" 31 spline rear and dyno'd 313rwhp/331rwtq- i wish i would of dyno'd the car to see what it would of put down with the C4/ 8" or even a 5speed

That's a pretty good read. Have any of you AOD guys used the TransGo kit? How does it address the shifter shuffle? Do you just shift manually from 1-2 and then it still shifts 2-3 automatically but at a higher RPM, or can you control the 2-3 shift manually?

You can buy shift kits that will make the AOD work ANY way you want it to.
Just about any aftermarket valve body will eliminate the "shifter shuffle".
