Hey All,

my automatic tranny on my 66 occasionally will not go into gear. It happens just after starting the car. I'll put it into drive or reverse and nothing. My fluid level seems to be ok, and the transmission was rebuilt about 25k miles ago. I'm thinking it might be something in the linkage, but my understanding of the transmission is that mystical tree frogs live deep within the tranny case and they jump from gear to gear making it run. Any help would be appreciated.

You can try to hold a slight rev, about 1500 and see if it will go into gear. See if maybe the pump is not up to par. But usually this is from bad seals internally. Fluid slips by and doesn't make the bands clamp like they should, or the drum lock up like it should.

I would add fluid. Bottom line the pan needs to come off. If it is a pick up problem, over filling should fix it. If it is a pump or anything else in the tranny it should not. Over filling is not a fix just helps trouble shooting.
