CAI question about filter size?

picked up the American Muscle CAI for my 95 GT. Lets just say I'm not that impressed......but for the money, it will have to do. Didn't want to shell out big money for a mediocre mod.

First off, I had to purchase a couple of larger hose clamps because the ones in the kit were too small. Secondly, the bracker that holds the filter through the fenderwell....the mounts that fit into the stock rubber grommets......the holes that were drilled were nowhere close. I did manage to get one of them secured along with the rubber grommet and bolt that bolts it to the side of the fender at the top. Annoyances yes....but I did get it to fit half assed.

My bigger concern comes from the size of the filter they include with the kit. It is not very big? Not sure if it has to be, since they say it has more surface area to pull air in from, but I was expecting a little bit more. The filter is approximately 6-7" long and about 5" in diameter then tapering down smaller. (conical)

Will this thing flow enough air with that little filter? ....my car will also be getting a H/C/I swap in the next week or two......

like everything else, you get what you pay for. did you make sure you had the right clamps in the right places? the filter should be okay

Yes, it is. There is a minimum surface area needed and then anything bigger does nothing. A typical 5" diameter 6" tall air filter is plenty for a 302 that peaks in power at 6000rpms....

If the exhaust is too big it will actually hurt your performance, a bigger air filter will NEVER EVER hurt performance. You are wrong sir.

However, bigger is not necessarily better. Back to the original topic. The filter should suffice...

If it will not hurt then why would you not have as big as possible? Look at JLT's intake, they are all 4" piping. I have 4" piping on my 5.0 and a 9" long filter. The throttle body is the same way. Take in example your setup, while I'm sure you make decent power you would be better off with a 90mm TB. Even if it did not make more power it certainly will not hurt it. Go big or go home.

you can probably replace it with a longer k&n one... but a larger one may not fit in the fender

Now you are talking about intake manifolds. Where did I say anything about them? I bet your 347 doesn't make much past 410rwhp does it?
