Cali smog question

I just took my car to get smogged and it passed everything except for on the 15 mph test the allowable NO(PPM) is 873 and my car measured a 985. But6 at 25 mph allowable is 812 and my car measured a 796. What can I do to lower these numbers that will be very cheap. I was only running 87 octane at the time. Please help, I only have 10 days for them to redo the test for free, and I am out of money to do anything expensive ( just payed 607 dollars in parking tickets wtf). Thanks in advance.

I kind of had the same problem in norhtern cali. i passed the 25mph and failed the 15mph by a lot for some reason. i personally thought the guys was dicking me cause he said that we make it work for a price when his boss wasn't around. i just went somewhere else and did some stuff to the car that cost about $5 and a little bit of labor. i went back and put the factory headers cause they didn't oem numbers, made sure there weren't any leaks in the exhaust. i went to kragen and bought that garanteed to pass smog additive for $5. it's pretty harsh on your system but you can turn around and put some good additive after the test is over. if you don't go back to the same place just look for the most qualified place you can find in the phone book. i passed the second way under california requirements. one last thing if you have spent soo much money on your car i really shouldn't hurt to put a little bit better gas in your ride. it deserves it.

whats up

here is some stuff i have saved cause smog is a bitch, i had a real tough time smoggin my ride cause i got a good cam in that car, i ended up just loosening the cat back from the h pipe but they have a sensor to see that there are no large exhaust leaks so you got to play with the gap till the numbers are good, go to a no pass no pay place and its no prob. you can also let the car get pretty hot by holding the rpm;s up while it is not moving, not a pretty thing to watch or see but my uncle owns a smog shop and ive seen him pass some garbage by getting it real hot. you can try opening up the spark plug gap a bit also, try putting some dialectical grease on the connections to make sure good spark also.

Back timing down to 8 degrees
(any less is not legal)

Run hotter T-stat (192)

Full tune up w/oil change

Adjust idle to as close to 1000rpm
without going over (950 is the best)

Have fuel inj professionally cleaned or use
the below mentioned (Amzoil Power Foam)

Spray 1 full can of Amzoil's Power Foam in the
throttle body while car is running

Double check to make sure your TPS is at
.993-.995

Back fuel pressure down (around 30psi w/vacuum)
if you got and adjustabel fpr

Run 2 oz of "RXP". Many mechanics at smog s
tations use this to pass customer cars.
this **** is real good

Use 89 octane, higher octane burns slower and
raises emmissons

Run 1 or 2 bottles of rubbing alcohol to a
1/4 tank of 89 octane


If you are still having problems, you can goose it. Depends on how much
they check.
For the test
1. Disconnect the check engine lightbulb
2. Run the smogpump tube directly to crossover behind the heads.
3. Run a hose from the h-pipe/4cat air injection tube in a sneaky fasion
and dump it to the fender.
You are now adding more air earlier and dumping some exhaust.
4. Do the same with the hose on the side of the filler neck. Crankcase
vapors are now being dumped.

If this still fails, get an alternator pulley and attach it to the smogpump front. You will need to drill 3 holes in the inner crevase of the pulley to get it to attach. DONT DRIVE LIKE THIS! Attach the pulley around the corner from the shop and dont idle there while waiting. The airpump _will_ sieze after 15 minutes of this but until then, it will be a supercharger for your exhuast. There will be practically fresh air bellowing out of your tailpipes.

I recenty payed a visit to a smog station in CA so I know what you are going through. I have a MSD ignition box which is supposidly suppose to help burn better. I got supprising got pretty low emissions so I really don't know what the trick is myself. My friend installed an MSD on his car and noticed a huge emissions drop in his results which he now swears by. Check your plugs... it may be time to get some new ones. Make sure that your timing is set to 10 degrees also because CA requires it. Basically a little tune up may be what you need to get you to pass.

Mine passes every time since I put on new cats! I think good cats can cover up a lot of other problems!

Yeah. Your cats might be shot and unfortunately they aren't cheap either. I believe MagnaFlow have some CARB approved cats and x pipe so you might want to look into that. They will run a few bills just to let you know. Another thing is to run your car hard right before going to the smog station. This will get the cats nice and hot which will help burn up the gasses before it gets to the tail pipe.
