I have a 2002 mustang gt and the rear caliper pistons won't screw back in. I don't know if I need to go rent the tool, or my e break is still on (but the lever is all the way down) or if I just need new rear calipers. please help thank you

In my experience IF the rear caliper piston won't turn then the caliper is toast (assuming that the brake bleed screw is open). I JUST replaced one of my rear for the same reason. You could tell the piston was binding because the rotor was polished on the inside but not on the outside (brakes dragging).

I've never been able to get them back in without the tool. You have to push and turn at the same time. Most auto places rent the tool, I bought one on Amazon for $25 and it works great.

Do you have the tool that presses in as it turns, or the cube you put on the rachet? If the later, those never work.
