calling all ENGINEERS!

So its my first post in a while, thought I’d make it good.

This post is geared more toward the Mech/Auto Engineers out there. I’m currently in school pursuing a Nuclear Engineering Degree (basically a ME degree with a Nuclear twist) and love it. Although, I’ve always wanted to get an engineering job in the high performance automotive field and believe I have the knowledge and street smarts to pursue such a career. Graduated UTI, built a couple cars, bikes and worked in a shop for 5 years. I feel Im just pissing away my life sitting behind a desk doing nuclear stuff. While its cool, its just not for me. But, for the past few years, I get dead ends when trying to get started into the field. There has GOT to be someone on here that has knowledge of how to get kicked off. Would love to hear from some of you!

its tough in the automotive field, ive looked and it would require me relocating and im sure the pay wouldnt be as good as what yuour making now.

But FYI, check out prochargers site, they are always looking for people it seems

If you find it, let me know, haha. I'd love to work in that field, too. I've found that it's one of those things where you're always one of 5000 applicants competing for one of five openings, and even then you'll have to move 500 miles to the nearest facility.

I wasn't moving to detriot...pretty much sealed it up there. Smaller companies seemed to have less job security.

ME is like a Jack of all trades. You can have two guys with the same degree doing totally different jobs.

Word. A bachelors in mechanical-E pretty much teaches you a little bit of everything. Other engineering practices, not so much. I was blown away the other day when a chemical-E didn't know what a digital multimeter was. I'm no electrical-E, but I have one in my toolbox and I'm not afraid to use it!

BTW, me and 4 close friends are all MEs. One is in HVAC, one is in tool & die sales, one works for a company that makes nuclear powerplant equipment, one is trying to get into marine design (boats), and I design orthopaedic implants and surgical tools, haha.

I have a ME degree from UNC Charlotte. We had a large Motorsports program due to all the local race shops for the NASCAR teams. I would say here is a good place to start looking for a job if you are willing to relocate. It is really hard to get into the teams, you kind of need to know someone the teams are very competitive. Well, I am. I basically summed it the end result of what i do. But i mainly work on equipment that produces flat panel displays and microprocessors and such.

I work on the gas purification side of this. It's critical because if you get one little spec of dirt on some of these chip wafers or panels..it's ruined and a lot of money was just wasted. (like $50K or more) So yeah, it's gas(air) filtration, but theres a lot more to it really.

I'm trying to transfer in the company to the division which does a lot of plastic injection molding. I think there are FAR more opportunities if you know how to work and design with plastics.

Look at companies that provide engineering contract services, like SAIC (SAIC: From Science to Solutions) or MTSI (MTSI Homepage), etc. They seem to have a broad gambit of opportunities. I have one of those general degrees, too (Engineering Physics), and ended up in aerospace. I still do most of my real engineering at home, though, making things for the 'Stangs & other hobbies.

Get your eit/pe certificate too...it's easier when you are still in college.


Contracting can be lucrative if you are good. Guy at my work contracts for two days a week, and makes 50,000....for a 6 month contract with my company. They resign every 6 months so he's been there 4 years so far. That's 100k to work 2 days a week. He is a smart guy though
