can I retard the cam 4degrees just by moving it back a link on the chain or do I have to get an adj. timing chain?

what the overall plan was was to do 1.7 RR's on the stock cam and retard it 4degrees. so I get a little more lift and move the power band up. I have heard of a few people doing this as an alternative to an b or e cam for cheapness and ease to do and getting some good gains and more rpm out of thier motors while keeping good low end and driveability.

I want to stay away from a cam until I do heads at least

any input?
