I've decided to go with a 393 stroker kit for my 69 Cougar. I'm looking at a hydraulic retro fit roller cam. What do you recomend?
Also, I want a manual five speed, what do you think is the best option? Gforce T5? Tremec?
I already have a set of trick flow heads for it, full MSD, 3.89 gears, locker rear end. Air gap intake and 670 Holley carb...

I have a 393 in a 67 mustang coupe. I had a custom hyd roller cam ground for my application from Preditor cams. I have had him grind me two cams for two different engines I built and both preform better than any off the shelf cam I have ever had. The price is about the same as a cam from the big cam companies. I would go with a G-Force T5 with a G-Force case. The shift much better at high RPM than a Tremec. I have toured the G-Force plant and the owner showed me the difference between his tranny and a Tremec. They cost a little more but you get more. Just my two cents.

comp cams has a decent selection of retrofit roller cams, as do a couple of other cam grinders. although if you can step up to a custom ground cam for your engine for about the same price, go for it.

as for a trans. i suggest using a richmond R.O.D. six speed. the buy in price is rather stiff, but the trans is probably the toughest one on the market.

3K is kind of a steep buy in for the Richmond...

I already have the T5. I'm willing to sell it off to offset the cost, or get it upgraded somehow. I was hoping to be able to finish my 5 speed swap for around a grand, as I have almost everything else. I have the hyd stuff, the bell, the pedals. I don't have a good "T5" cross member, and may have to shorten the drive shaft. but that will be later.
The car will only see the track a couple of times. If I can get a legitimate "100 mile an hour club" sticker, that will be the last time it goes to the track. I'm working on three of these cars, and would like to get on with my life. Finish paint and interior, you know how it goes.
But I don't want to do stuff twice from a lame first effort..
I know not of the Gforce T5, or the astroglide thing. I've heard good things about tremec. However, just because I'm not going to race it everyday doens't mean I won't spin the tires at a stop light or two, or three or .....

I'm also willing to look at a custom cam, but do I have to get the retro kit first, and then the cam?
This is my first planned stroker motor, so a lot of this is new..

A word of caution on the gforce T5. I had one built and got a terrible vibration out of it because the gearset was defective. The builder told me that I was not the first to have this problem.

You need a bigger carb. 750 at least unless you are going to stay VERY mild with the cam.

Note that hydraulic rollers tend to give up the ghost at about 5500 rpm because of the weight of the valvetrain leading to valve float. If you try to go really heavy with the springs to compensate you end up compressing the lifter. If you are planning to build a HP peak much above that RPM then I would go with a solid roller instead. I saw this for myself on my 462 FE because about 5800 rpm the HP/torque plummeted with a hyd roller.

I have a 715 Holley on the shelf for the 69, and I have a 750 laying around somewhere.

The roller conversion is just a spider in the valley, isn't it? To hold dog bones in place for the lifters? I'm thinking somewhere in the .550 lift range for the cam. I have to get the part number for the heads so I Can verify those numbers again...

If you are using a non-roller block you will need a small base circle cam. On a stroker with that much lift the cam may flex. I researched this and that is another reason I went with a custom cam and linkbar roller lifters.
