All right, I'm getting really anxious to get some heads, probably some 165's, Twisted Wedge, or Performer 5.0's. I know it's dumb to not do a cam while you're doing heads, so here's the question. What kind of cam would you guys recommend? I don't want a custom grind cam, just a good off-the-shelf cam will work. I want to make power up to at least 5,500, maybe 6,000. I don't mind a fairy rough idle. I DO however want to retain some sort of fuel economy. What would you guys recommend? I was reading some charts a while back and was reading about advertised duration, and from what I could tell, 268/268 would be a good number for me. I'm not quite sure how what that usually comes out to @ .500" of lift or whatever. So any help is appreciated. Thanks

- Chris

EDIT: Oh yea, I checked the FAQ thread, but I'm cam retarded so it wasn't much help.

I still want good low-end, but I really would like some more high-end power. I want my power-band to be between 1,500 (doesn't matter so much where it starts) and 5,600 or so. I want to have some highway power too.

well this is my dyno sheet with the trick flow cam and mods listed in garage. I have since put on long tube headers and o/r h pipe but haven't made it back to the dyno.

I figure the dyno sheet can tell you want you need to know about the stage 1 cam.

the TFS stage 1 that mootang has seems to work well for most people, also, crane 2030 is what i have with the AFR's and put down 280rwhp and 320ft/lbs with stock MAF and TB, with no loss of low end and pulls hard to 6k

YOu can't have both. The more duration you add, the more top end power you get, at the cost of low end power. Think of it like this. If you want the car to be fun on the streets, get a good low end cam. If you want it good at the strip/street races, get a good high end cam.

Now don't get me wrong, after h/c/i you will still have plenty of low-end, no matter which cam you go, just depends on where you want your torque band to be.

Sounds like the stock cam can give you what your looking for. The stock heads and lower intake are the most restrictive not our cams.

Okay I guess I should say I want decent low-end power. I don't want phenominal with just as good top-end, I just don't want to lose all my low-end. I don't neccessarily want huge low-end gains, but I DO want to see some nice upper end gains. I know the stock cam is decent, but come on, if I'm doing heads I might as well swap cams too right? Any more suggestions? I'm looking into the TFS Stage 1 and the Crane 2030 right now, thanks for those.

a lot of people talk crap on the alphabet cams but the E 303 or F303 are decent cams.

Why you don't have too depending on what your going to do with th car in the future i.e power adder. Also how much are you willing to spend on an OTS cam??That will limit your choices Cranes 2031, Steeda#19,wolverine 1190 are all good OTS cams for under $210. But if you can spend more the crower 551(FAQ has specs) is good so is the AFM N4 (222/230 .512/.512 ) but they are $250.

i dont think a $250 shelf cam is going to make anymore power then a $210 shelf cam, just depends on setup. Also to ctman i think somthing else you forget to mention was what size rocker arms are you going to be using in ursetup as this may limit your off the shelf cam selection if u decide to go with the 1.7s. Its funny ive heard so many good things about all the cams almost seems like u cant go wrong with any mild cams like the 2031, steeda 19, comp xe274r (i think) tfs 1.

Also i heard the lower the LSA of the cam the higher in the powerband the power is going to be? correct? But i heard if we dont want to have idle issues and our stock computers go crazy then we need to stick with a 112 LSA or better, and i know the cams designed for our 94-95 eec are suppose to have a 114 LSA? (cant remember im going all of memory)

i say a 2031 or a TF stg. 1.

With mine, I gained power everywhere, but alot up top. I installed it straight up too. I almost wish I retarded it a little, because I have to baby 1-2 shift at the rack a little with DR's.

Do what I did. I bought a used stg. 1 for $100 shipped. There are some others out there for sale. Otherwise pay $150 shipped from summit. What a deal!

I would go with the trick flow stage 1 and when you do your heads i would also put on a set of 1.7 roller rockers. You can make tons of power

I got the TFS 1 cam -4 deg's with 1.7 rockers the low end is nice but when it hits 4k is when it really comes alive and I like it, plus you can pick it up from summit for like $140 I think.

No I never said it would it would just limit the options. But when your spending $250+shipping on an OFS cam a custom cam becomes more of an option for a few bucks more (if you don't mind the wait).

Quick question about the rocker arms. I was looking at the TFS 1.7's, and they have them for 7/16" and 3/8" stud mount. What size would I need for twisted wedge heads?

I think I have decided on the TFS Stage 1 cam, it seems to be what a lot of guys are recommending.

EDIT: I was also reading about the cam, and it said it was necessary to install new lifters when swapping the cam. Would the FRPP lifters work?

I know on the afr's you can get either size stud so i would imagine it is the same with the TFS. did you already buy your heads?

No not yet. I was assuming they ARE stud mount and not pedestal mount correct?

just to make sure i'm not crazy, the crane 2030 and 2031 are the same cam, just ones designed for 1.7 ratio rockers and the other for 1.6's??
