Alright, I did a search, I promise, but I did not really get any good material so I thought I would make another of my rare posts.
I will be installing a cam in my car this weekend, and I have never done this before. I just had a couple of questions pertaining to it:
Is there a trick to keeping track of the distributor position when I pull it? Can I just use a marker and try putting it back in the same way? Anything I need to know about the distributor in relation to installing the new cam?
How much do I need to get stuff out of the way? The engine will still be in the car. The cooling system will be pulled, but do I need to go as far as taking the front bumper and everything off?
Do I need to buy a degree wheel? I have no idea how to degree a cam, do I need to worry about this?
When installing it, I liberally coat it in motor oil, put a bolt in the end, and carefully install it without nicking the seal, right? Anything else?
Since people on Stangnet are very helpful, and will want to check to make sure I have other things in relation to this, here is the answers to those questions before they are asked:
Yes, my Edelbrock heads are in getting a valve job and assembly, with the Trick Flow valve springs that match the cam
The car is an 88 5.0 (converted to Mass Air!), and the cam is a TFS Stage 1 (roller)
Yes, I will be installing a new timing chain set
Special thanks to 5spd GT by the way, the write up on the fuel pump swap really helped me out, and that went so smoothly I could not believe it. I have had a harder time changing taillight bulbs than changing that in tank pump because of that write up. If anyone has a good write up on installing a cam, please by all means post it. Thanks again.
