Cam installation

Anybody done a cam install with the motor still in the car? Can it be done? Does anything else need to be done (body wise) other than remove the bumper and hood latch? I know I have to remove the radiator and the front of the motor (water pump, etc.) I'm just wondering if the radiator support needs to come off too, or tranny crossmember to tilt the engine, stuff like that. Or, if it would just be easier to pull the engine rather than all the body parts. This is my D/D so I'm looking for the easiest/fastest weekend swap.

All ive heard is all u need to remove is the radiator and a/c condensor.

You do not have to pull the engine out to install a cam. Just pull the radiator and move the A/C condensor out of the way and pull off the front of the motor. You do not have to remove the bumper cover or any supports.

I have done it several times before and it is really not a big deal.

Also how much and where did u get ur new lifters from?

Like 89sleeper said you don't have to tilt the motor or pull any body panels off. Just pull the radiator and unbolt the top two mounts on the condensor and swing it out of the way.

Just one thing to look at when you pull the timing chain cover. Put the car up on jackstands and loosen the oil pan bolts. This allows the oil pan to sit lower and lets the timing cover come off alot easier. And remember there are two bolts on either side of the timing cover that bolt the cover to the oil pan. Otherwise it is pretty easy.

If you really want to save some time get a set of Anderson Ford's tappet tools. It lets you pull the cam without having to pull the intake. Saves a bunch of time.

Otherwise not too hard. It took me about 5 hours from start to finish to put a cam in my 93 today.

Hydraulic roller lifters are like timing chains, only a very select few amount of companies out there (exactly three to be precise) manufacture them. When you buy a brand name, most came off the same assembly line, but just get "personalized" to identify who gets them. Don't overpay on them thinking you are getting a substantially better product over someone else's lifter.

Yea true, I think Federal Mogul is one of the big guys that "make all the parts" I went to Advance auto today for a price of lifters just to compare to the other guys, they have Speed Pro hi-rev something lifters and the kid even said theyre a Federal Mogul product, which is what most other companies use i think and they just stick them in a box and put theyre name and price on them. So if i was to get the speed-pro lifters would they be the same as say ones from Summit or Jegs?? Sorry if i stole the thread lol

Thanks, sounds like it'll be easier than I thought. From what I could tell it looked like it was going to come right through the hood latch and the ford emblem on the grille. And I'm going to change the Intake also so that's not a worry.

I got mine from Summit at the same time I got my cam. I forgot to get rockers, but I will before I do the install.

I did it over the summer with the motor in the car, no problems at all. I got my lifters from Summit, they are just the FMS lifters nothing special.

be carefull when moving the condenser around. i poped one of the lines. scared the hell out of me. it made such a loud explode type noise then it took about 20 mins for all the freeon that spill out . that was an expensive learning experience the hose alone was close to $250 fom ford
