Ok.. I bought a set of procomp 190cc castings about 6 months ago and had them machined with good valves, springs, ect...I was originally going to use them on a 331.. My wife wants to move, and we want to have another baby soon.. So that means the Stroker will be on hold for a while.. So I decided that I am gonna put these heads on my 302.. I know they are prob a little big for this motor but is there an off the shelf cam that would get me better low end power? I figure they prob do not flow as good as a " name brand head" of the same size. The valves are 2.02 and 1.6 I think.

Treat yourself to the most power you can get considering you are sacrificing the stroker and call Ed Curtis at FTI and get a custom cam.

As to the heads being too large, NIKwoaC should have something to say about that

ok I was thinking about a custom grind but wasn't sure where I should be looking to get one. Thanks for the advice.

I haven't been able to come up with a reliable source for the Procomp flow numbers on a Google search... It looks like they're all over the place. If you have the resources, it might not be a bad idea to get yours flowed... Who knows, they could be terrible. I read about a few sources who claimed to see ~220 CFM @ .600", which is downright awful. Others are claiming 275ish at .6", which makes a little more sense. Regardless, the Procomps aren't known for their quality... The port shape could be a wreck and that's why the numbers I'm reading about are all over the place. If I were you, I'd want to have them flowed.

Talking to Ed or any of the other good custom cam guys about your options would be a good idea.

Let us know what you do... I'm always curious.

I have heard that the older castings that procomp was putting out were bad castings..but I have seen some of the newer stuff and they look much better than they used to. I had them cleaned up and put all new quality parts in them. I am going to look into getting them flow tested. If its not too bad of a price I might get them checked. For cheap heads they look pretty good. Hopefully they perform ok.

I had a set 4 years ago I pulled from a 414ci motor and picked up over 60hp at the tires with a AFR205.

Custom will be your best choice since they have 2.02" intake valve and you'll need to be careful with duration and overlap to keep them from hitting the stock pistons. The stock piston doesnt truly have the proper radial clearance for a 2.02" valve on a inline head.

are you comparing the 190cc to a 205? If so wouldn't it be expected to pick up some extra hp by swapping these? I am not expecting to gain a tremendous amount of power by putting these on. I just think it will be a while till I build the motor I want. I figured why leave them sitting on my work bench when I could run them until I can afford to build another motor. Does anyone have any idea how much power I can expect from this? I hope it's enough to hit 300rwhp.

Talked to Ed Curtis this weekend, nice guy to deal with. Answered all of my questions without any added bullsh*t. So I ordered a cam. We will see. Comp cams told me I didn't need a custom grind. They told me just use the xe264hr..Does anyone ever "need" a custom grind? No the car would run with my stock h.o. Cam.. That just made me mad... Thanks Ed

Comp makes their money by selling shelf cams, so you shouldn't be surprised when that's what they try to push on you. Comp has so many OTS grinds available, they've got 95% of people covered with a cam that "fits" each application within 95% (if that makes sense). You go pure custom when you want your engine to go that extra 5%.

So what did you and Ed talk about? Let us know how everything works out!

Well I guess I want that extra 5%.. Lol.. He gave me the detailed sheet to fill out, I just had some questions about degreeing the cam and checking clearance. This will be the first time I replaced a cam so I wanted to make sure it gets done right. So he sent me some info to check to make sure the cam is timed correctly. I don't think comp would have done that for me

Haha, Comp does send install and degreeing instructions with their cams, but not the individualized support I'm sure you're getting from Ed.

Ed's a smart guy. Definitely a good choice. He designed my TLSR cam.
