I have been told through pm's and posts on other threads that I have started that I would benefit from going with a differnet cam based on the setup that I have below...

302 block bore to 306
hydraulic rollers
1.7 RR's
B303 cam
RPM performer heads
RPM performer intake
MAC shorty headers
MAC H pipe
MAC mufflers (dont know what model but they are VERY loud)
holley 750 DP
MSD 6AL ignition.
4:10 gears
HD T5 tranny

Apparently the B303 is holding back potential power that my motor can produce.

A. Is this true?

B. What Cam would work best with this set up?

As it is set up now, it pulls very strong all the way to 6,000 and runs like a champ. I dont want to mess with this for the benefits of 5-10 hp, but if 40 hp or more is waiting to come out with a different cam, then I might be inclined to change.

Thanks!!!

Perfect cam for your combo? Custom. Second choice? Comp Cams XE270HR.

The B cams power band is a narrow one, and it only makes power (from the spec sheet) to 5200-5300 rpm. With the 1.7s it would be a little better though. The cam I recomended has a powerband of 1800-5800, pretty much perfect for your intake/heads. That's the cam I chose for my Performer RPM heads/intake combo anyway. I'll be installing next week.

Yup..good cam the comp XE I like it..the car is a blast from 2000 to 6000. I would not be surprised if you gained 10-20 RWHP but the main issue would be a much broader powerband. Next for power increase..you may want to look at a set of LT's..they work VERY well with modded 302's.

The B303 is a decent cam, but it's not "THE" best. liekthe other guy said a custom cam is best and will cost you about $350. The XE cams are all very good and cost about $250. The XE270HR would work well with your combo.

Now I was just looking at the XE270HR and their are two vesions of the cam. One is on a 112 centerline the other 114.

The 112 is .544" lift with 1.7 rockers.

The 114 is .512" lift with 1.6 rockers.

Both are 218/224 duration at .050"

I also like the XE cams, They are great OTS cams. I will be Installing the XE274 next month, to try and get the most from AFR185's and RPM intake. This cam would also work good in your combo (I'm assuming you put flat tops in there for approx 10:1) one problem with this cam is it will put you dangerously close to the rev limiter....wait you said 750dp so the rev limiter is no problem(no computer right?). This cam will make great power to 6200-6500 RPM, And should simply be like night and day over the b cam over 5500RPM.
Good luck.

You can install either of the XE270HR cams with 1.6 or 1.7 rockers. I emailed a tech at Comp Cams and that's what he said. It's the exact same cam, just with a different LSA.

Custom is not a bad way to go at all..I would have used a custom, but here in Canada the final price to my door was just not reasonable when compared to a comp which a local vendor had available. I run 1.6 scorpions on the 112 lsa version..it's a bunch of fun to drive..and surprisingly nice lopey solid idle. Alphabet cams are OK but they've been around for 20yrs...there a bit lacking tech wise compared to whats available today.
