cam timing

On a 5.0 I'm building, I have a Cloyes timing chain set with the indexable crank sprocket. I know that if you set it in the 4 advanced position, it will run harder coming out of the hole, but my question is what if anything will this affect on the computer? Or should I just run it straight up?
 
The old rule of thumb about advancing a cam for bottom end and retarding for top end is no longer a great rule to use. Many custom cams have assymetrical designs and many have advance or retard built in (so installing it straight up is like having it advanced or retarded).

I would still want to degree the cam, even with installing it straight up. Each part has tolerances, and when summed, if they all lean one way, your valve events can be off from what you desired. Or they could all cancel out. But you dont know unless you degree.

Of course, not doing so works, you just dont quite know where you are at. :)
 
I know a lot of people dont like the desktop dyno but if you want to see what advancing or retarding the cam is going to do. I used it when I did mine and if your short of cash or just dont want to pay for it and have limewire you should be able to find it on there. :D
 
what file do we search for?

retarding cam will make it peka higher and pull better high rpm... advancing does the opposite

if you are getting a vortech and you have stock cam, you would want to retard it 4 degrees to pull it past 6k

the stock cam has 4 degrees of advance ground in.
 
Type "desktop dyno" in the search box for applications if its the one I picked up it'll also have the stock 5.0 specs.

Yes retarding it gives you some more usable rpm's on the top end with some sacrifce to low end torque and vice versa for advancing it.
