Can an AOD shifter cable stretch?

Is it possible for the shifter cable on an AOD to go bad without breaking? It seems to shift fine into each gear and hold them all but recently, I have noticed that when I park on an incline, that it wont always hold park. Last night I parked it in the driveway and as I was getting out, it just started rolling backwards making that god awful clanking noise.

I know that the linkage is adjusted correctly, it just seems like somtimes the cable wont push the shift linkage that extra inch to fully engage it in park. Can the cable get streched over time, not allowing to fully move the linkage?

Its a 91 LX and as far as I know, the cable is the factory one from 91, the shifter is stock, but it would occassionaly do the same thing when I had the B&M Hammer shifter installed.

Any ideas?

could be the thing that locks the tranny, i heard that it is a small piece of metal and could possibly break easily. it would have to take a long time for a cable like that to stretch if at all, i don't think it is your problem. could be in the shifter itself but since you said it did that with another, i'd suspect internals. try to put it in park by hand under it and see if it still rolls. make sure to use the P brake.

I'll look into that. If it wasnt broke before, I would be surprised if it isnt now with all the noise it made as it rolled down my driveway. Gonna suck if I find out that my parking brake dosent work at the same time, would however help with the "lose weight" new years resolution though

One other thing that I forgot to mention is that if I park the car nose down, it never slips out of park. Only when I am parked nose up on a hill.
