in my garage with basic tools? I've done many mods and such, but never this before.

It's an '84 GT with stock motor, well, stock everything.
Thanx

If you have the tools/expierence to drop a tranny then you can do it no problem, because thats the hardest part

Man I don't know. That's a tough one. I'd say you'd better just buy a whole new motor

On a more serious side, I'd have to agree with SlimJim.

i replaced my rear main seal with a flat head screw driver. this is when i changed my transmission and it hasnt leaked since. the most important part of doing this is doing it SLOWLY and CAREFULLY. if you gouge the crank shaft, it will constantly leak and you will then be screwed. another important part is putting it in the same depth/position as it was before you took it out.

goodluck.

I believe you're thinking of the tail shaft seal. The rear main is a whole nother story.

I'm pretty sure 84's come with a 2 peice rear seal. Not a 1 peice like the roller motors. But like it was said before you have to pull the tranny, clutch, and flywheel to do it. If you feel comfortable with doing that then go for it.

Nope. The rear main seal is right behind the flywheel. Also know as the rear crank seal.

technically you could do it w/o 'dropping the tranny' - unbolt the motor and pull the motor instead.

in his garage with "basic tools" i doubt he could pull the motor. easiest way o tackle this would be to get a haynes manual and drop the tranny/clutch/flywheel and go for it. it fixed my leak, then i got another from the low oil sensor...

you must not know me too well - i often have 'my tongue firmly planted in my cheek,' as i think Michael Yount put it once (in reference to a comment i made, much like this one).

i was being facetious. he was mistaken with the part name being discussed in this thread, and someone had corrected it already. i was merely trying to be a little funny, showing that there was a way to do what he described.

you are absolutely correct in what you said, but need to brush up on recognizing poor humor. im just messing with ya, bud.
