Can i use a stock Oil Pan With a High Volume Pump?

im on a limited budget righ now, and i have a high volume melling oil pump. instead of spending 250 bucks for a 7 qt pan like i was intending, can i use the stock pan with the high volume pump? will i run into fittment problems, or pressure problems?

The potential exists for the pump to run itself dry with a stock oil pan. Not recommended.

not to sure when someone SHOULD ungrade there oil pan, but i was figureing since i want a SC with a 347 strocker kit, id go with something like a 7qt....lol

My car still has stock pan and pump...however I rarely see over 6000rpm.

High rpm, high volume pump, High heat/etended power ops like auto cross or just to get the oil away from the crank for max hp are reasons for bigger pan and pump.

I would not want to try it (though it has been done) for the sucking the pan dry reason/chance.

A high volume oil pump will work with a stock oil pan but is not necessary unless you plan on running an oil cooler or high rpm. Some people say that the High Vol oil pump will suck the pan dry, this is not true. What is actually happening is the pick up is to close to the bottom of the oil pan causing the pump to cavatate. when a high vol oil pump is installed the clearence between the oil pump pick up and the bottom of the oil pan is critical. This diminision can be usually be found in the instructions for the pump. Chris
