I came across a Mallory distributor for dirt cheap but i'm not sure if i can use it or if i should just sell it for a profit. I can't seem to find the part number anywhere to identify what it's for. I was told it was for a carbed 302 but there's no place for the vacuum advance, just the 3 wire plug coming out the side.

It has a plate/stamp on the side that reads:

Mallory Comp 9000 Part # 9170401A
Unilite Breakerless Ignition

I got it with an extra module and cap for $60 so i figured if nothing else i could sell it for more than that, but i'd like to use it if i can. Anyone got any info?

Damn that site lists this as a $519.00 distributor! I called a Mallory tech line and talked to a guy, he said it's probably the best Ford distributor they ever made but they don't make them anymore. He said it's "the deal of the century" if i paid $60 for it, because back then it listed for $350-$400. It's in like new condition and he said the replacement modules are $45 from Summit.

I've got one in my '66, it's a great distributor. You did get a hell of a deal on it.

My module is going out, probably because I didn't use a ballast resister. :bang: Anyways, for the record, Summit sells the replacement modules for $90.

Sooooooo.... If you decide to get rid of that extra module cheap and help a guy out... :D

So do you run it with an ignition box or just by itself? I've got a different Mallory on my car right now and i'm not running any ignition box, just the distributor itself. He said either way is fine but with a box you get rev limitor options.

You've gotta run that ballast resistor man! It's like a $12 part so i keep a spare in the glove box!

I just run it by itself, and it works fine. No ignition box.

I was under the impression I didn't need a ballast resistor without a points distributor. Then again, I've been running this dizzy for about 7 or 8 years without the ballast resistor, so I guess I can't complain too much now that I need a new module.

You better believe I'll be running a ballast resistor once I get a new module though!

I'd say if you ran that long without one you might not need it, but it's safe insurance. I'm gonna have a spare ballast resister and module in the car at all times just in case.
