This may help you.

Take the factory spec spring pressure valve open/close and reduce it by about 15% to account for age.

Hope this helps.

I dont see how this relates to my question... Im not using the original stock springs im wondering if i install new springs that provide a seat pressure of 160lbs and a open pressure of 340 if the valves , rockers , pushrods would be able to handle it.

Oh sorry i misread the question. I thought you wanted to know what the stock spring seat pressure was.

So you figure the stock valvetrain can handle the 160 seat pressure 1.75 and 340lbs @ 1.25? Any idea how much the stock valvetrain is possible of holding?

no idea........ i do know there have been some class racers using springs a little more aggressive than this, and spin em real high.......

what cam could you be running in a stock head that required such seat pressure?

what springs did you find with those specs, that fit a stock head?

Im gonna be running a nx264 cam which only requires a seat of 130 and open of 280 but i cant afford the correct springs that comp recommends nor the machining on my heads... Ive done all the port work myself and everything else with the rebuild im just stuck on the springs... These are some old dual ford racing springs from the 60s that my dad had but never used. I put one on my head as a test measured the install height then measured the poundage on a scale and it came out to 160seat and 340 open... I have the option of some other springs which provide the exact install height and seat and open pressure that i need but the retainers wont fit tight they are a bit loose... heheh I might go look for some washers soon that i can use as shims so i dont have to use the stock 5.0 retainers in the spring (The ones that came with the springs dont give the right install height so the spring needs to be shimmed up a 1/16 of a inch).
